Sarah Jessica Parker explains that she rarely discusses politics on social media platforms because such significant elections occurred even before the advent of apps like Instagram.
On the Monday installment of “The Best People” podcast hosted by Nicolle Wallace, Parker shared that she typically steers clear of discussing politics on social platforms and believes there are more effective methods for sharing her views on crucial matters.
Parker mentioned that they rarely engage in conversations on social media as they feel it’s not suitable for deep, complex discussions. Instead, they prefer to avoid brief comments when dealing with contentious issues like disputes or elections. Parker was particularly careful about how to address the election topic because they believe it can divert attention from a campaign, become sensationalized, and is often misinterpreted. They also noted that one has little control over such discussions.
The actress from “Sex and the City” stated that there exist numerous paths towards fostering a more harmonious community, emphasizing that Franklin D. Roosevelt was successfully elected as president in 1932, even without the existence of social media.
For a very long time, numerous events unfolded, both on the right and the left, with Republicans and Democrats in power for multiple generations. Notably, no one needed to make a statement on Instagram during these elections,” Parker explained.
Parker shared that, as a public figure, others have encouraged her to speak out more openly. However, she’s had to discover her unique approach to feeling at ease with expressing herself freely.
She expressed that she would rather not discuss topics she’s not well-versed in, and steer clear of intricate subjects requiring deeper analysis and sensitivity. She mentioned that these topics deserve careful thought, and while she knows people might not be interested in such details, she wants to assist instead of potentially damaging matters close to her heart.
In discussing her self-education regarding politics, Parker mentioned that she extensively reads up on the subject and strives to discern between what’s alarming or potentially harmful versus what’s merely frightening in rhetoric. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of recognizing the gap between statements made and actual events taking place.
Although Parker isn’t comfortable with being pushed to support political figures, she has a history of championing political groups she strongly identifies with. In the 2024 presidential race, she backed then-Vice President Kamala Harris, along with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as they challenged President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.
In the month of October 2024, she expressed her support in a heartfelt Instagram caption, which was paired with a photograph showing her displaying a sign bearing the names of Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. Her sentiments were clear: for the sake of my nation, our education system, sensible gun legislation, fair wages, opportunities, women’s rights, voting privileges, Dreamers, arts and culture, elderly citizens – especially my mother – she is casting her vote with overwhelming happiness, hope, and pride, choosing Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz.
