As a dedicated cinephile who’s seen more movies than I can count on one hand (and a few on my feet), I have to say that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s career has always left me in awe, especially her iconic role in “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The recent speculation about a potential rift between her and Jennifer Love Hewitt was, quite frankly, a storm in a teacup.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is clarifying a recent incident that sparked rumors of tension between her and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Both actresses became well-known for their roles in the 1997 film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” with plans for a legacy sequel causing much excitement among fans. After an interaction with a journalist that led to questions about potential unresolved issues, Gellar decided to address the situation on social media.
At the debut of “Dexter: Original Sin” in New York, Gellar was questioned about the upcoming revival of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” She only had positive things to say regarding the film’s talented cast and script. When asked by an Extra reporter about Hewitt potentially being part of it (which hadn’t been confirmed yet), Gellar responded in an awkward manner, saying, “I have no role in that,” before smiling and leaving.
On Friday, December 13th, Gellar took to her Instagram stories to address a particular matter. Positioned beneath a chair on the set of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, she penned down:
For hopeful performers, remember: displaying a ‘deer-caught-in-headlights’ expression can be ideal when encountering numerous familiar faces on a single production, yet finding yourself momentarily flustered because you’ve momentarily forgotten the significance of an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) this month.
I recently posted a picture from my visit to Freddie Prinze Jr.’s set, where filming for a reboot was about to start (although an official announcement hadn’t been made yet). Notably, Sarah Michelle Gellar also shared her return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise in her stories.
No Bad Blood Between Scream Queens
Prior to Sarah Gellar’s viral interview, Hewitt previously discussed the rumored tension between them on the “I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario” podcast. When inquired about their friendship, Hewitt disclosed:
“Totally, I mean all of us were in that experience together kind of figuring it all out.”
Gellar starred in the original film as Helen Shivers, a teen beauty pageant queen. Although she won’t be returning for the reboot (Helen dies in the 1997 film), she is connected to the upcoming film in a couple of ways: her close friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing, and her husband is reprising his role as Ray Bronson. Prinze Jr. and Hewitt will join a cast that includes Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Lola Tung, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is set for a 2025 release.
Despite Sarah Michelle Gellar not returning to Southport, North Carolina (or any location for the sequel, as plot specifics are secret), she’s currently appearing in “Dexter: Original Sin”. This prequel series delves into the early years of the infamous killer and is set in 1990s Miami. “Dexter: Original Sin” features Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, Molly Brown, Reno Wilson, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, and Gellar. This crime drama made its debut on December 13, with new episodes being released every Friday on Paramount+.
