Sarah Michelle Gellar Got Heckled by Buffy-Hating Vampires in Her 2002 SNL Monologue

Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s monologue on Saturday Night Live in 2002 was hysterically funny, with a distinct flavor reminiscent of her character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

On October 12, 2002, when the actress served as host for the third time, she kicked off her SNL monologue by briefly updating the audience on her recent activities. She had tied the knot with Freddie Prinze Jr., her I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star, only a month prior, after their movie Scooby-Doo hit theaters in June 2002. In the live-action film of Scooby-Doo, Gellar and Prinze portrayed Daphne and Fred, roles written by James Gunn who later became the director of Superman. During her monologue, she humorously mentioned that she had recently recorded an album, although in reality, this was part of a joke as she hadn’t done so.

Holding an acoustic guitar, Gellar was ready to play a track from the album she mentioned, following a nod to her recent role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, which had made its comeback with Season 7.

Sarah MIchelle Gellar’s SNL monologue offended the vampires in the audience

In my own words, Gellar stated that he composed all the songs for the album and added that the experience was nearly as fulfilling as driving a stake through a vampire’s heart. However, it didn’t quite match the enjoyment of decapitating them! He expressed this with a strum on his instrument.

Before she even started singing, the camera focused on three vampire spectators (depicted by Rachel Dratch, Chris Kattan, and Amy Poehler) from the crowd – clearly displeased. In truth, they were prepared to collect their NBC Store purchases and leave, as Gellar stammered that she hadn’t realized there would be vampires in the audience.

To be honest, it was mainly due to the downpour that we managed to make it here, my dear fan. You see, we hadn’t realized you were hosting this event… I must confess, I’ve been growing a bit tired of how vampires are often depicted in popular media. It can feel rather demeaning, if I may be frank.

“But Daddy, I wanted to bite the Jimmy Fallon!” said Baby Vampire (Poehler).

I understand, my dear,” the Father Vampire replied. “Initially, we all had thoughts of sinking our teeth into Jimmy Fallon, but this woman here seems determined to jab a wooden stake through your heart instead, so it looks like an early night for you! We’re essentially kind-hearted folks, don’t you agree? We value honesty. I immigrated here in pursuit of an honest living, and also with the ambition to turn people into vampires, but it seems we have a ways to go yet.

Dratch’s mommy vampire mentioned her desire to attend The Caroline Rhea Show, a program that was broadcast on NBC between 2002 and 2003. However, her spouse firmly stated that it was recorded during the daytime.
