It features goofy musical numbers that keep the laughter flowing, even when the absurd plot becomes a bit far-fetched. While newcomers might be confused about the storyline, it’s easily overlooked in this case. So, let go of your thoughts and enjoy the mindless visual gags and continuous antics instead!
As a longtime fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, I find Sandy Cheeks to be one of the most fascinating characters in the series. Being a marine biologist myself, I can appreciate her dedication to scientific exploration and her unique approach to adapting to life underwater. Growing up in Texas, I never thought I’d see a squirrel scientist living alongside crustaceans and starfish!
1. In the morning, Sandy finds herself in a predicament when a massive mechanical grabber drains Bikini Bottom out of the water, causing its inhabitants to scatter in fear. With quick thinking, Sandy manages to escape and rescue SpongeBob. It turns out that the machine belongs to B.O.O.T.S., and a hint suggests that they were behind the disappearance of Bikini Bottom. To make matters worse, Sandy finds that her lab has been transformed into a water amusement park. Intrigued and puzzled, she decides to board the daily flight to Galveston, Texas, with SpongeBob in tow. But little does she know, she’s unwittingly playing along with the sinister plans of B.O.O.T.S.’s new owner, Sue Nahmee (portrayed by Wanda Sykes). It seems that Sue aims to exploit the residents of Bikini Bottom for her own profit, particularly focusing on SpongeBob for her nefarious schemes.

In the movie “Saving Bikini Bottom,” CGI and live-action characters are flawlessly combined. The film is packed with action in every scene, making it easy to underestimate the effort and talent required to create such intricate visual effects. The Nickelodeon team behind the popular cartoon and its three previous films, “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” “Sponge Out of Water,” and “Sponge on the Run,” have continually improved with each release. Notable scenes include Sandy and SpongeBob being swept away by a tornado to evade hungry Texas critters and law enforcement officers.
In the narrative, I come across Sandy’s vibrant circus performer kin and their reliable camper van. Craig Robinson takes on the role of the muscular Pa Cheeks, Johnny Knoxville becomes her whip-wielding brother Randy, while Grey DeLisle lends her voice to the entire acrobatic squirrel clan named Cheeks. They’re never far when Sandy requires assistance.
A Painful Narrative Detour Almost Sinks SpongeBob
In the story of Saving Bikini Bottom, the plot encounters a snag when the squirrel squad and SpongeBob reach Sue Nahmee’s nefarious stronghold, B.O.O.T.S. Her evil plan is so absurdly foolish that it could potentially lower one’s intelligence to ponder upon it. The writers, Tom Stern (An American Werewolf in Paris) and Kaz, the creator of Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show, appear to have run out of creative inspiration in the second act, causing the narrative pace to slow significantly. The show is filled with excessive and unfunny jokes that serve as pointless padding, stretching the runtime. Watching the live-action lab assistants (Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Matty Cardarople) stumble about in a tiresome effort at physical humor feels almost excruciating.
Saving Bikini Bottom Ends in a Gloriously Nutty Way
In this revised version, SpongeBob’s eccentric persona and quirky traits take center stage, leaving audiences spellbound with their absurdity. It seems as if the filmmakers indulged in some mind-altering substances when they dreamt up such a wild plot twist. Yet, it leaves you captivated by its sheer madness. Thankfully, a clever squirrel swoops in to resolve the situation.
Watching Bikini Bottom isn’t for everyone. It caters to certain groups of people with great enthusiasm. If you’re not a child, avid SpongeBob fan, or under the influence of hallucinogens, it may not be worth your time. The movie doesn’t aim to be serious or straightforward at all. It requires no intellectual engagement; instead, it’s an absurd journey from the get-go and largely achieves its goal of being amusing.
