As a die-hard fan who’s seen every Saw movie more times than I care to admit, I can confidently say that Tobin Bell‘s portrayal of John Kramer is nothing short of iconic. The twist at the end of the original Saw was so mind-blowing that it left me reeling, and it still does today. It’s rare to find a movie that pulls off such a shocking twist without giving away any hints in the marketing, and Saw did just that.
From the instant John Kramer staggered back to life at the end of “Saw,” the character instantly became an iconic figure of horror. The actor himself has since reminisced about his first reaction to what he thought could be one of cinema’s most memorable scenes. Indeed, it proved to be unforgettable, and the 2004 low-budget film not only provided one of the greatest cinematic twists but also spawned a series of movies that has now reached ten installments.
At a special event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Jigsaw killer’s debut, Bell shared his first impression upon reading the script’s climactic scene where the seemingly ordinary corpse is unveiled as the mastermind behind the gruesome deaths in the movie. During this year’s Beyond Fest screening, he elaborated:
At the closing scene of the movie, when I went through the script, I hadn’t expected that particular twist. It struck me, ‘If they pull off this scene skillfully, it might become one of those scenes in cinema that are… indelible.’ Indeed, it has turned out that way, and without Leigh’s emotional response to that scene, it wouldn’t have the impact it does now.
In contemporary cinema, the climax of the film “Saw” continues to astonish viewers with an unexpected twist, even if they’ve seen it before. Few modern films can execute twists as effectively as this one, primarily because many give away hints in their promotional materials, causing audiences to search for clues throughout the movie and usually guessing the secret beforehand. Unlike other movies, “Saw” did not employ such marketing tactics, resulting in a genuine shock for those watching it in theaters.
The Saw Franchise is Returning for an 11th Installment
Initially, the first three movies in the Saw series concluded John Kramer’s story, as his character met his end in Saw III. However, due to the franchise’s consistent popularity during Halloween, Lionsgate refused to let it fade away with Kramer. This decision resulted in a string of progressively violent and disjointed sequels where various characters associated with Jigsaw continued his gruesome work of creating and carrying out intricate, deadly traps. As the franchise shifted its emphasis towards the gory demises of morally questionable individuals, much of the original creativity that defined the first Saw film was diminished.
Following a series of sequels and a moderately successful spin-off featuring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Shannon’s character Kramer made an unexpected comeback in Saw X, a film set between Saw and Saw II that brought the creator of the traps back into the spotlight to widespread acclaim. Now, it appears that Saw XI is in production, with Michael Shannon reprising his role as Kramer. Although the specifics about where this new story fits within the broader franchise are yet to be revealed, it’s expected that the film will continue to expand the intricate puzzle of the life of one of horror cinema’s most distinctive antagonists.
