As a film enthusiast with a penchant for Hollywood’s golden age, I can hardly contain my excitement about this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival! The lineup of stars and talent is nothing short of staggering, making it feel like the Oscars have moved south for the season.
Rather than waiting till next year for the Oscars in Hollywood, it feels like they could as well move it to Savannah later this month since most of the major contenders for this awards season are likely to be heading there for the SCAD Savannah Film Festival happening from Oct. 26-Nov. 2. (As a gamer speaking about films)
Shortly following the festival’s decision to honor individuals like Annette Bening (lifetime achievement), Jerry Bruckheimer (Young Woman and the Sea), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Karla Sofia Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Jharrel Jerome (Unstoppable), Richard Linklater (Hit Man), Mikey Madison (Anora), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus), Steve McQueen (Blitz), Lupita Nyong’o (The Wild Robot) and Daisy Ridley (Young Woman and the Sea and Magpie), The Hollywood Reporter has discovered that an additional 10 prominent figures will be making their way south to participate in screenings and accept awards.
Three actresses who are strong contenders for best actress include Demi Moore, who will be honored with the Icon Award at a showing of “The Substance”; Amy Adams, receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award at a screening of “Nightbitch”; and Marisa Abela, being presented with the Next Gen Award during a presentation of “Back to Black”.
Three notable actresses nominated for supporting roles are expected to attend: Felicity Jones will be honored with the Spotlight Award during a showing of The Brutalist, Natasha Lyonne will receive the Maverick Award at a screening of His Three Daughters, and Margaret Qualley will collect the Luminary Award at a screening of The Substance.
A threesome of director-writers will be honored in the following manner: Pablo Larraín will be presented with the Auteur Award during the Closing Night showing of “Maria”; Jason Reitman will receive the Vanguard Director Award at a screening of “Saturday Night”; and RaMell Ross will be given the Breakthrough Director Award at a screening of “Nickel Boys”.
The filmmaker-performer-entrepreneur Diego Luna will be honored with the Impact Award during a showing of the documentary “State of Silence,” which he and Gael García Bernal (his partner at La Corriente del Golfo production company) co-produced.
In addition to that, there’s more exciting news: A flood of renowned documentary filmmakers is coming to town for the 11th annual Docs to Watch panel, happening on October 30.
