As a long-time fan of sci-fi films and someone who has spent countless hours researching the mysteries of the human brain, I must say that “Lucy” was a film that truly captivated me. The way it blended science fiction with an intriguing narrative was simply mesmerizing, and Scarlett Johansson’s performance as Lucy was nothing short of extraordinary.
The science fiction movie “Lucy,” starring Scarlett Johansson, first premiered in July 2014. Written and directed by Luc Besson, with production by his wife Virginie Besson-Silla, the film became a massive hit at the box office, earning over 11 times its $40 million budget. Over a decade after its initial release, “Lucy” is once again gathering attention on streaming platforms. Recently, it made it to Netflix’s Global Top 10 list, and is now also popular on Peacock, having garnered 6.5 million viewing hours from August 19 to 25, 2024.
A mix of science fiction and action, the movie “Lucy” explores ideas about evolution, human capabilities, and both conscious and subconscious thought. Its intriguing and layered storyline, along with Scarlett Johansson’s captivating performance, contributed to its immediate success in 2014. Additionally, Johansson’s popularity following the release of “The Avengers” movie boosted her fan base, which increased viewership for “Lucy.
The excitement surrounding the movie, much like any other, eventually subsided as audiences examined the storyline more closely, pointing out the film’s questionable scientific aspects and plot inconsistencies. Yet, the fact that Lucy is once again topping the charts a decade after its initial release suggests that the film still possesses the charm that initially attracted viewers.
The Allure of Scarlett Johansson
As a cinephile, I can’t say I’m unfamiliar with the captivating talent that is Scarlett Johansson. This remarkable actress has been gracing our screens for nearly three decades, starting her acting journey at just nine years old in the fantasy comedy “North” (1994). Since then, she’s built an impressive reputation, tackling projects across various genres – from action and adventure to period pieces and animation. She’s proven herself a force to be reckoned with in every category.
It’s likely that a significant portion of Lucy’s recent popularity stems from the charm and appeal of its leading actress, Scarlett Johansson. Since her role as Lucy in the Avengers, Johansson has established herself as a prominent figure, known for her star power and devoted fanbase. The character development of Lucy, starting with a vulnerable and helpless portrayal at the beginning to a display of fearlessness, innovative fighting skills, and complex emotions later on, serves to highlight Johansson’s versatility and acting range. The film effectively showcases Johansson’s allure, drawing viewers into its narrative and contributing to Lucy’s widespread acclaim.
Lucy Has an Intriguing Storyline
Alongside Scarlett Johansson’s mesmerizing portrayal, Lucy offers an enticing narrative. The movie’s plot centers around Johansson’s character, who is coerced into serving as a drug courier for a criminal kingpin. Unfortunately, she is subjected to cruel treatment and during the assault, receives a kick in the abdomen. This incident causes the drug-filled pouch concealed within her to burst, flooding her body with a powerful narcotic.
The mysterious drug works in the most astounding of ways. It gives Lucy superhuman abilities, gradually unlocking more and more of her brain. Her mental and physical abilities exceed those of a stereotypical human being, and Lucy embarks on a vengeance mission intent on revenge against her captors. Her mission comprises the most merciless but innovative killings and entertaining fight scenes. Within this, Lucy is also attempting to make sense of what is happening to her, reaching out to neurologist Professor Samuel Norman (Morgan Freeman). Lucy is a real-life imagining of his work, in which he researches what would happen if humans could use more than 10 or 20% of their brains.
Regardless of the critical criticism that followed Lucy after its release, particularly due to concerns about its inaccurate representation of human brain capabilities, the compelling narrative structure and Scarlett Johansson’s captivating portrayal of her character make Lucy a film worth revisiting multiple times. The fact that it became a box office sensation despite facing criticism and has since regained popularity demonstrates the strong appeal of Lucy to viewers.
Will There Be a Lucy Sequel?
After the impressive reception and high viewership upon its debut in 2014, Lucy became a compelling candidate for a sequel due to its box office success. Yet, despite the passage of ten years, a follow-up Lucy movie has yet to materialize.
Initially, Luc Besson, both the writer and director of the film, declared that he had no intentions of writing a follow-up to the movie. Later on, he claimed that the script for “Lucy 2” was already finished. However, similar to past unfulfilled promises, it was confirmed again that “Lucy 2” would not materialize. As conflicting reports about a sequel circulated and Johansson gained fame in the “Avengers” movies, the excitement surrounding “Lucy” eventually waned.
In 2022, there were whispers of excitement as reports suggested that Lucy might spin off into its own series, with Morgan Freeman potentially returning to his role as Professor Norman. However, the information has been vague, and since no official word has been given about a new movie or show, it’s best to approach these rumors with caution. Given that the original film concluded with Scarlett Johansson’s character becoming omniscient, it seems unlikely that she will take on the role again. The potential absence of Johansson could diminish the appeal of any potential sequel before it even premieres.
As we await reliable information about the future of “Lucy”, viewers can enjoy streaming the film currently. Despite some inaccuracies in its portrayal of the human brain, “Lucy” remains an engaging watch, a fact underscored by its recent popularity due to Scarlett Johansson’s compelling performance and the film’s intricate, action-packed storyline. If a sequel, “Lucy 2”, doesn’t materialize, Johansson still has several exciting projects in store, such as the highly anticipated “Jurassic World Rebirth”. In this upcoming project, she will be joined by Jonathan Bailey from “Bridgerton” and Mahershala Ali from “House of Cards”. “Lucy” is now available for streaming on Peacock.
