Scott Derrickson, director of “The Black Phone”, is collaborating with his wife, fellow filmmaker Maggie Levin, on a movie adaption of the horror novel “Ghost Eaters”.
Screen Gems, a production company that holds a first-look deal with Derrickson’s Crooked Highway label, has acquired the film rights for the popular book authored by Clay McLeod Chapman.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that I’ll be penning and leading the way for this upcoming adaptation. Alongside Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng, we’re teaming up to develop and produce this project under Crooked Highway. We’re just getting started on this journey, with the project still in its initial stages of development.
Chapman’s novel is often characterized as a harrowing journey into the abyss of sorrow and substance abuse. The story revolves around a circle of companions who stumble upon a medication called Ghost, which grants them the ability to perceive the deceased. However, this elixir harbors inexplicable consequences, and as the blurb on the cover indicates, after ingesting it, there’s no turning back.
The book received numerous awards upon its release three years ago. It was recognized as one of Vulture’s top horror novels, Paste’s top horror books, Book Riot’s top horror novels, and Crime Reads’ best horror fiction books for the year 2022. Additionally, it was selected as a September 2022 Library Reads pick and an October 2022 Indie Next Pick.
Chapman has been recognized with Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson Award nominations for his horror novels such as “Wake Up and Open Your Eyes”, “What Kind of Mother”, and “Whisper Down the Lane”. He’s now inked a three-book contract with Tor Nightfire, starting with the release of “Mr. Lonelyhearts” in 2027. Besides literature, Chapman has also made his mark in comic books and films.
Previously, Levin has been responsible for writing and directing the full-length horror episode “My Valentine” for the Hulu/Blumhouse series ‘Into the Dark’. Additionally, she penned and directed an original segment of ‘V/H/S/99’, which debuted at TIFF in 2022 and was acquired by Shudder.
She served as a second unit director for Derrickson’s high-budget monster movie “The Gorge” and “Black Phone,” two of the most popular titles on AppleTV+. Her responsibilities were also carried out on his upcoming sequel, “Black Phone 2,” which is set to hit theaters in October.
Levin is represented by William Morris Endeavor (WME) and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, while Chapman is represented by The Gotham Group and Ziffren.
