As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of films, I must say that the loss of Scott L. Schwartz is deeply saddening. His career spanned across multiple realms, from professional wrestling to Hollywood, and he left an indelible mark on both industries.
It has been reported that Scott L. Schwartz, famed for his wrestling career and portrayal of “Bruiser” in the movie series, passed away on November 26, 2024, at the age of 65. After news broke of his death at his residence in Covington, Louisiana, tributes poured in for him, including from his former costar in Ocean’s Eleven.
Clooney shared his personal thoughts on social media, saying in a statement:
I’m sad to learn about Scott passing away. We worked on three movies together, and his subtle yet impactful performances always left me in awe – it felt like a soft jab of brilliance every time. He was an incredibly kind person, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Schwartz hailed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and initially made his mark in professional wrestling. Notably, his towering stature also found him fitting well for some challenging characters in movies, given his wrestling personas as “Giant David” and “The Israeli Commando Joshua Ben-Gurion.” In the late 90s, Schwartz shifted gears to acting. However, it was his portrayal of “Bruiser,” a strongman helping the crew with their intricate heist in the 2001 film Ocean’s Eleven, that catapulted him into more prominent roles.
After delivering a standout performance in “Ocean’s Eleven,” he was cast in the subsequent films, “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.” He also landed roles in other prominent movies like “Spider-Man,” “Starsky & Hutch,” and “The Scorpion King.” Interestingly, this latter film included another newcomer in the acting world, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Despite not quite reaching the peak of stardom as the “Red One,” Schwartz’s career boasted over 110 credited roles.
Schwartz Was an Admired Gentle Giant
Beyond establishing a formidable presence in wrestling and portraying various villains and action heroes on-screen, Schwartz was inherently a generous individual who cherished contributing to the world. He actively participated in numerous charitable events, helping raise funds for noble causes, and his affection for his fans was evident at conventions. A user once reminisced about this on X/Twitter:
In contrast to his menacing roles on television, Scott Schwartz was genuinely kind-hearted in real life. At a convention, I had an encounter with him when my 11-year-old child was quite small. It took the entire weekend for this towering figure, standing at 6’10”, to convince her that it was safe for him to pick her up.
Another user supported the comments, and added their own thoughts on his passing, saying:
It was a privilege beyond words to cross paths with Scott at the gatherings I organized within the professional and charitable sectors. He was an extraordinary individual, adored by countless others. Rest in peace, Scott.
In any setting – be it on-stage, in sports, or in real life – there seems to be no one with a negative word about Schwartz. Amidst a world where tabloids are often filled with stories of celebrities misusing their power, leaving only positive accolades behind is truly an exceptional legacy. Rest In Peace.
