‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Creator Disputes Cancelation Label Put on Netflix “One and Done” Series

'Scott Pilgrim Takes Off' Creator Disputes Cancelation Label Put on Netflix "One and Done" Series

As a cinephile with over three decades of experience under my belt, I have to say that I find myself deeply invested in the world of Scott Pilgrim and the latest developments regarding its animated series. Having grown up reading Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels and being an ardent fan of Edgar Wright’s film adaptation, this news has left me somewhat torn.

The animated television adaptation, inspired by Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, premiered on [network name] in November 2023 to a flurry of praise and speculations about another season. However, it was recently disclosed that the show will not continue and has been terminated. Yet, Bryan Lee O’Malley, its creator, expressed his disagreement with this label, reaffirming his stance on the supposed end of the one-season series.

As per O’Malley, the notion that Scott Pilgrim would embark on a second season was preposterous since it was never intended for one.

Originally planned as a single installment, the series is now being shared on Instagram (as per Bleeding Cool) by O’Malley.

On certain occasions, you might post something on the web, only to be greeted by a flurry of sensational headlines the following day. To clarify, the show we produced for one season, SPTO, will not continue with another season as some may have hoped. However, fear not, Scott Pilgrim is destined to return, though I can’t provide details on when that might be – so please don’t inquire about it just yet.

Following the message sent the day prior, he revealed that the show wouldn’t be coming back for another season. Initially, O’Malley mentioned that it would have been extremely challenging to produce a second season due to the significant favors required to produce the first one.

Scott Pilgrim’s Co-Creator Previously Vented Frustration at Netflix

In numerous interviews last year, O’Malley expressed uncertainty about a potential second season of “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off“, stating that there were no additional ideas to explore. This implies that, although the series couldn’t technically be canceled due to lack of ideas, it seems Netflix has chosen not to commission any further animated Scott Pilgrim stories, effectively ending the possibility of more adventures featuring the character.

Scott Pilgrim’s co-creator BenDavid Grabinski has hinted that he might not be finished with this universe. His sentiments echo those of O’Malley, who stated there was no plan for a continuation of “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.” However, earlier this year, Grabinski may have given Netflix little incentive to consider a spinoff or sequel, as he criticized their popular binge-watching model. After all the series episodes were released on the platform simultaneously, he remarked:

As a person who suddenly lost their entire season in one fell swoop, it’s the most absurd thing I can think of. There’s simply no benefit to it. Picture the scenario if the entire season of X-Men ’97 were released all at once!

Fans initially disagreed and argued that they found it more convenient to watch the entire series at once rather than waiting for new episodes weekly. This preference seems to support the idea that opinions vary when it comes to the streaming versus episodic release debate. If Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was not meant to have a second season, then it’s debatable whether the way it was released had much impact on the matter.
