Scream 7 Director’s Nightmare: Death Threats, FBI Involvement & a ‘Dark’ Exit

The horror film genre is undergoing an exciting revival, with many of its top-tier horror films returning to cinemas in new sequels. Notable among these is Wes Craven’s Scream, and the latest installments (now available on Paramount+) have done well at the box office. However, the production of Scream 7 has faced some challenges, and its former director, Christopher Landon, recently shared his struggles during the creation of the upcoming horror movie.

Information about Scream 7 is scarce, but fans appear to be eagerly anticipating this slasher film. It was announced in August of 2023 that Landon would direct the project, succeeding the team at Radio Silence. However, numerous complications arose, causing him to depart from the Scream sequel. In an interview with Variety Fair about his upcoming movie Drop, he described the experience as emotionally taxing.

The Scream was an intense and stormy ordeal that left me stunned and bewildered for some time, but now I find myself in a position where I can discuss it openly as I’ve managed to transform the negative situation into something beneficial. That transformation is what I call Drop.

Discuss the positive aspect or bright side of the situation. Given Christopher Landon’s background in horror, particularly with the Happy Death Day series and his affection for Scream, he appeared to be an ideal candidate to revive the seventh film. Regrettably, complications arose shortly after he was appointed for the project.

The controversy regarding his perspective on Scream 7 ignited when Melissa Barrera was dropped from her role as Sam Carpenter due to comments she made on social media about the ongoing dispute between Israel and Hamas, sparking a heated discussion online. Ultimately, Landon found himself being criticized heavily and faced an overwhelming amount of negative feedback online, as he himself confessed.

Under severe threat, I found myself in a situation where my life and that of my family were at risk. Messages arrived menacingly, warning that they would harm my children because I advocate for child murder. As a result, authorities such as the FBI and studio security heads had to scrutinize these ominous threats. The hostility was palpable and terrifying.

landings a spot to direct Scream 7 was an unparalleled dream for Landon, but the genuine circumstances surrounding it were far from rosy and downright chilling. I can’t help but shudder at the thought of what he must have gone through, not just professionally, but also personally with his dear ones.

From his perspective, Christopher Landon asserts that it wasn’t his choice to sever ties with Barrera regarding Scream 7. Given that she was the leading actress in the previous two films. He addressed the criticism surrounding this cast change in an interview, stating:

(Note: I have tried to maintain the same tone and structure as your original sentence while making it more natural and easy to read.)

It’s often assumed that I played a role in her termination, but let me clarify: it wasn’t my decision. I had no influence over the situation whatsoever. The intricacies of Hollywood and its power dynamics may not be fully grasped by many, leading some fans to mistakenly believe I was involved. Consequently, they seemed to target me with their criticism, as if I were the one pulling the strings.

Despite the recent turmoil regarding Melissa Barrera’s dismissal and Jenna Ortega’s exit as Tara Carpenter from “Scream 7,” Landon remains connected to the project. He disclosed that the studio requested a fresh start, providing insights into his reasoning for stepping back. As this accomplished filmmaker explained:

They asked me to carry on, essentially meaning ‘You can try again. You can work it out.’ However, the level of mistreatment I encountered—I chose not to invest any piece of myself in that situation. To me, it wasn’t worth the trouble. Instead, I preferred to channel my energy into something else where I could experience gratitude and regard. The hostility and abuse tainted my enthusiasm for moving forward, and I lost my enthusiasm for the concept of persevering.

In his words, making this choice wasn’t simple; it involved grappling with the sadness over giving up a cherished opportunity – a genuine dream job – while simultaneously navigating the malicious comments and threats that came his way during the creation of Scream 7.

Eventually, the original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson was tapped to direct the upcoming film, with Neve Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott. On the other hand, Christopher Landon appears excited about the opportunity to contribute to Drop due to this shift. The horror movie is set to premiere in theaters on April 11th, making it a part of the 2025 film release schedule. Meanwhile, Scream 7 is tentatively scheduled for release on February 27th.
