Scrubs Creator Says Reboot Is 'Really Close' & Reveals if Former Cast Is on Board

As a die-hard fan of Bill Lawrence’s work since the golden days of Scrubs, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the potential revival of this iconic series. With his impressive track record, including co-creating Spin City, Ted Lasso, and the upcoming Bad Monkey, it’s no wonder that Lawrence is as busy as ever.

Excitedly, I find myself eagerly looking forward to possibly returning to Scared Heart Hospital, a place I’ve missed dearly for nearly fifteen years. The mastermind behind the early 2000s medical comedy “Scrubs,” as well as co-creator of “Spin City” and “Ted Lasso,” Bill Lawrence, has hinted at revival discussions surrounding the hospital-based sitcom. With a five-year, all-inclusive deal with Warner Bros. TV, Lawrence is more occupied than ever, yet he’s tirelessly working to bring this reboot to life.

In a conversation with Deadline, the creator of the popular show “Scrubs” shared his ideas for resurrecting the series and the challenges he’s encountered during the process. Lawrence mentioned that many of the original cast members have expressed interest in returning, including Zach Braff who has previously collaborated with Lawrence on the Apple TV+ series “Bad Monkey.” The creator is currently brainstorming a way to blend a revival featuring familiar faces with a modern update by introducing new characters as well.

It appears we’re almost on the verge of solving this puzzle, and it seems promising. A significant portion of the creative team both behind and in front of the cameras are deeply engaged and enthusiastic, suggesting that we’re nearing completion.

1) The main motivation for reviving the show seems to revolve around two key aspects. Firstly, people are curious about the medical world from a personal perspective, especially wanting to understand the lives of their loved ones involved in medicine. This is an essential component of any successful reboot. Secondly, I believe the show resonated because it depicted young individuals entering the medical field, who were driven by idealism and a sense of calling rather than the stereotype of wealthy doctors playing golf. The medical profession today is far from that cliché, making it crucial to incorporate these two elements when considering a revival.

The creator mentioned that one major hurdle he faces when bringing back the show is his five-year contract with Warner Bros. Television Group. Since Scrubs is created by Disney’s 20th Television, this agreement with Warner Bros. TV has presented challenges in organizing the upcoming series. However, armed with a solid creative team, clear concepts for the show, and several key members of the original cast ready to join, Lawrence is optimistic that he will find a solution to make it all come together smoothly.

Lawrence’s Schedule Is Packed For The Near Future

The television tycoon has seen his career pick up in recent years with the major success of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso in which Jason Sudeikis plays an optimistic soccer coach. With season 4 of Ted Lasso possibly on the horizon and Lawrence’s deal with Warner Bros. TV, his workload doesn’t seem to be getting any lighter.

The popular TV show, “Bad Monkey,” reportedly has a second season planned, according to its creator Lawrence. If there is indeed another season of this crime-comedy series, it will likely be adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s sequel novel to “Bad Monkey” titled “Razor Girl.” Intriguingly, Lawrence also disclosed an Easter egg hidden in the first season that suggests a second one might be on the horizon.

“Somebody asked me why I picked Bad
Monkey
. Carl Hiaasen, who is an idol of mine, has like, 20 bestsellers. It’s one of the only books he wrote a sequel to; the sequel’s called

Razor Girl
.

And if you watch the opening credits, the sand thing — no one’s seen it yet — there’s a couple things, like a beach ball, and if people pause it when they go by a beach chair, there’s a copy of that book, like a summer read sitting there. That will tell people what is next.”
