'Scrubs' Reboot is Officially in Development at ABC With Bill Lawrence

As a long-time fan of sitcoms, particularly those with a hint of medical humor, I must say I am beyond thrilled about the potential return of Scrubs! I remember the good old days when Sacred Heart Hospital was my go-to destination for laughter and heartfelt moments. The news that Bill Lawrence is officially on board with the reboot has me more hopeful than ever that we’ll be seeing J.D., Turk, Elliot, and the rest of the gang again soon.

The revival of Sacred Heart Hospital, or as many know it, Scrubs, seems to be moving from speculation to actuality! Rumors about a comeback for this beloved medical sitcom have circulated for quite some time, but now, things appear to be taking shape. It turns out that ABC is actively working on the project, having secured the participation of the key figure responsible for making the show an iconic series during its era.

According to recent reports, ABC is in the initial stages of reviving the popular sitcom “Scrubs” following a deal reached with its creator, Bill Lawrence. Since Lawrence is already bound by an exclusive contract with Warner Bros. TV for four shows, negotiations were required to incorporate “Scrubs” into this arrangement. After several weeks of discussions, a solution has been found, enabling Lawrence to work on the reboot for both 20th TV and ABC. However, he will not hold the position of showrunner, which is yet to be determined as the project progresses. Meanwhile, Lawrence is currently committed to “Shrinking” and “Bad Monkey” for Apple TV+, as well as a potential fourth season of “Ted Lasso” for the streaming platform. He is also linked to an HBO comedy series with Steve Carell.

With Lawrence now involved, the crucial move will be to secure the main actors from the initial series – namely Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, and John C. McGinley – if they are willing to rejoin for a reboot. All have shown interest in returning, and with Lawrence on board, it should be simpler to guarantee their participation once suitable contracts are arranged. Meanwhile, one original cast member, Judy Reyes, is being considered for the series’ early stages, but her return comes with certain conditions. She departed the original show before its final season, and at present, she’s a regular on another successful ABC series called High Potential, which has good prospects for Season 2 renewal. Although her comeback is uncertain, rumors suggest that it might be possible for her to juggle both shows without any complications.

Originally conceived by Lawrence, the TV show named Scrubs offers a humorous glimpse into the world of Sacred Heart Hospital, deriving its name from a less senior member due to the initial characters being medical interns. This title reference also alludes to surgical scrubs, enhancing its hospital theme. The humor predominantly lies in slapstick elements, with many narratives unfolding through the daydreams of John “J.D.” Dorian (portrayed by Braff).

As a devoted movie critic, I’ve had the pleasure of following the remarkable journey of Scrubs from its debut on NBC back in 2001, all the way through to its final chapters on ABC after NBC chose not to renew it during its seventh season. Spanning an impressive decade, this medical comedy aired a total of 182 episodes, earning itself a place in many hearts, both among critics and fans alike.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the star-studded charm of the beloved sitcom, Scrubs. Not only did it captivate audiences worldwide, but it also managed to attract an impressive lineup of A-list guest stars such as Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Heather Graham, Michael J. Fox, and many others. Even in its final season in 2010, the series continued to shine with Dave Franco stepping into a series regular role, who has since risen to fame and built an impressive film career. To add to the show’s already illustrious legacy, Zach Braff’s directorial debut, Garden State, premiered during its run, receiving rave reviews and box office success.
