‘Scrubs’ Revival Nabs Series Order at ABC, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke Returning

Scrubs is officially scrubbing back in.

The beloved sitcom from the 2000s that’s been a topic of conversation for quite some time has finally received a series commission from ABC, where it’s been under development since late 2024. Interestingly enough, conversations about reviving this show with its creators and cast members had started years before that. Actors Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke, who were part of the original cast, have agreed to reprise their roles alongside series lead Zach Braff for the revival. Moreover, they will also serve as executive producers for the upcoming show, which is scheduled to air during the 2025-26 season.

Scrubs” aired for nine seasons between 2001 and 2010, initially on NBC before moving to ABC for its last two seasons. The show chronicled the journey of intern John Dorian, played by Zach Braff, as he advanced through his medical career while being supported by his best friend Chris Turk (portrayed by Donald Faison) and his romantic partner Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), who later became his wife. The original cast also included Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, Neil Flynn, and Ken Jenkins.

The resurgence’s tagline goes like this: “After a long while, JD and Turk team up in a hospital setting once more. Although medicine and interns may have evolved, their enduring friendship has remained strong. As both familiar and fresh faces traverse Sacred Heart, they encounter laughter, emotion, and a few unexpected twists on their journey.

For several years, Lawrence has expressed his desire to bring back the popular series “Scrubs”. During a session at the ATX Festival in 2022, he stated, “Given any opportunity to collaborate with people you enjoy being around, seize it promptly.” However, one challenge lies in the fact that “Scrubs” originated from Disney’s 20th Television (specifically, Touchstone TV/ABC Studios), while Lawrence now holds an overarching agreement at Warner Bros. TV. He managed to secure a provision in this deal to act as an executive producer for “Scrubs”, but he will not be the showrunner.

The responsibilities will be given to Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra, who were writers and producers on the initial series (with Batra appearing as a guest star in several episodes). They will serve as executive producers alongside Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer of Lawrence’s Doozer Productions, Braff, Faison, and Chalke.

Including “Scrubs” in their lineup significantly strengthens ABC’s comedy offerings, as it currently features only “Abbott Elementary” and “Shifting Gears,” led by Tim Allen.

Actors Braff, Faison, Chalke, and Hobert are all represented by different talent agencies and lawyers. Braff is with CAA, Range Media Partners, and Ken Richman; Faison is under UTA and Fuller Law; Chalke is managed by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro; and Hobert is with IAG and Jared Levine.

In simpler terms, each of these actors has a team that includes an agency and/or attorney to help them in their career.
