As a gamer who’s been through countless plot twists and cancellations in the world of virtual reality, I can empathize with Spencer Hudnut’s situation. It’s always disheartening when the rug gets pulled out from under you mid-game, especially when you’re deep into writing the final act.
In 2024, “SEAL Team” was among the shows that got canceled. The military drama aired its final episode this month, marking the end of the series. Last year, it was confirmed that “SEAL Team” would conclude after Season 7, and the show generally provided resolution for Bravo within the 2024 TV lineup. Now, Executive Producer Spencer Hudnut is disclosing how much of Season 7 was already written before the cancellation notice came in.
Although actor David Boreanaz was prepared for SEAL Team to conclude, the decision wasn’t immediately made. The series received a renewal for its seventh season in January 2023, but it wasn’t until November that the news of its cancellation was announced. This left quite a long gap between the renewal and cancellation, which unfortunately gave the production team enough time to progress significantly with the script before realizing the end was near. As Spencer Hudnut shared with TVLine, Season 7 was almost finished when Paramount+ decided to cancel the show.
As we neared the end of this season, when it seemed all but certain that we’d continue, I never dreamed it would be our last. It wasn’t until quite late in the production that I came to understand this was going to be the finale, and I was left with just a few scenes in the final episode to ensure a successful conclusion.
It’s not great when a significant development like this arises during the creation of a series finale. If the producer had known from the start that the show was wrapping up, parts of the season, including the finale, would likely have turned out differently. At least Spencer Hudnut found out before the writing process was finished, which is better than discovering after the script was finalized. Despite not being the ending that Hudnut originally planned, I still appreciated it. In the case of SEAL , the series finale managed to tie up loose ends and give characters closure, even splitting up some of Bravo’s relationships.
It appears that the early part of the season had established character arcs for several individuals, pushing them to reassess their actions or embark on new journeys. However, Spencer Hudnut acknowledged that David Boreanaz’s character, Jason, received a conclusion different from what was initially planned at the start of the season. Despite this unexpected turn, the closing episodes were still deeply emotional and prompted heartfelt messages from the SEAL Team cast on social media.
Unfortunately, despite fan anticipation, Max Thieriot couldn’t make an appearance in SEAL’s final season because of his hectic schedule on Fire Country. Although his character, Clay Spenser, had died in Season 6, there was speculation that he might reappear in a flashback or dream sequence. Even though he wasn’t physically present, his character was still referenced occasionally, and Alona Tal continued to portray Stella, Clay’s wife.
I often ponder how the final episode of “SEAL Team” might have unfolded if the writers had more time to prepare. Additionally, it’s intriguing to consider how the storyline could have evolved if they had ordered an eighth season.
