Sean Astin Shares Goonies 2 Fan Poster, And I So Wish It Was Real

As a devoted ’80s movie enthusiast with a heart full of nostalgia for the carefree days of my youth, I can’t help but feel a flutter of excitement at the prospect of a Goonies sequel. For nearly four decades, I’ve watched the original adventure unfold on screen, marveling at the misfit camaraderie and thrilling sense of adventure that made it a classic.

Over the past almost 40 years, enthusiasts of “The Goonies” have been eagerly anticipating updates about a possible sequel to this fantastic ’80s movie. Although some might argue that its content may not meet today’s standards, its enchanting allure and thrilling sense of adventure have kept it popular for nearly four decades. Fans have dreamed of a continuation, and while there hasn’t been an official announcement about “Goonies 2” (as of yet), Sean Astin, who portrayed Mikey, has sparked enthusiasm among fans.

Astin hinted at it by posting a fan-created art piece called “The Goonies: Still Good Enough,” suggesting a 2026 release with Spielberg involved. Someone should reach out to Spielberg immediately, as I can’t wait to see this happen!

Astin’s latest post about X (previously known as Twitter) is bound to bring back memories and enthusiasm among fans of the Richard Donner classic. This freshly sparked anticipation rekindles the dreams of a long-overdue sequel. His witty caption, “It’s our time. C’mon Steven…,” is an open invitation to Steven Spielberg, who was the executive producer of the original film. Take a look at the fan-created poster below and witness why fans like me are eagerly waiting!

The concept of “Goonies 2” has been in discussion for close to four decades now, but so far, our beloved band of underdog explorers haven’t reunited to declare their famous battle cry, “Never give up!” Despite numerous statements from Steven Spielberg and the original cast about a possible sequel, it remains unrealized.

Initially, the group that embarked on the “Goonies” adventure was merely a band of youngsters seeking One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. However, fast forward to today, many of them have become prominent figures in Hollywood. Sean Astin has been a familiar face for quite some time, while Josh Brolin’s career has soared with roles spanning from Coen Brothers films to blockbusters like “Dune” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Notably, Ke Huy Quan, best known for his role as Data, returned to acting after a 20-year hiatus, clinching an Oscar for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” marking a spectacular return to the silver screen.

Even though Richard Donner, the original director of The Goonies, passed away in 2021, the film continues to maintain connections with the top echelons of Hollywood through producers like Steven Spielberg and writer Chris Columbus who remain influential figures. Despite persistent whispers and anticipation for years, fans continue to dream about a sequel. Perhaps a fan-made poster and Sean Astin’s advocacy could be the spark that sets the ball rolling on a long-awaited sequel.

Astin’s playful jab at Spielberg is intriguingly timed. On the exact same day as Sean’s post, news emerged that might have sparked his casual suggestion for a sequel. On September 13th, Deadline published a story revealing that Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman, original cast members of The Goonies, dismissed rumors about a sequel that had recently arisen.

Feldman took to his X account to set the record straight. He wrote:

On a Two-Day Note, is The Goonies Sequel True? Everyone’s Asking… I Can Now Confirm 100% It Isn’t! I Don’t Have Any Information That a Sequel is in Progress, but the Great News is I Have an Exclusive Teaser Trailer for You! This is for my Favorite Project that is Finally Making its Way to Theaters Very Soon… #TheBirthday #ComingSoon

Meanwhile, Plimpton used her platform to shut down the news in an Instagram post. She said:

Friends, let me clarify that as of now, there’s no confirmed script for a Goonies 2, no one is officially attached to the project, and Steven Spielberg is not directing it. However, what is very much real is the importance of verifying your registration and exercising your right to vote!

The rumors about a potential sequel to the movie were ignited by an article from The Sun suggesting that Warner Bros. was preparing for a follow-up, with intentions to begin filming the following summer and possibly release it in either 2026 or 2027. Yet, posts from Plimpton and Feldman raised questions about the assumption.

It’s worth noting that Astin has expressed different opinions about a possible sequel over time. In a 2019 conversation with Collider, he hinted that a direct sequel might be beyond reach, but he was open to the concept of a reboot. Contrastingly, in 2015, Astin seemed more certain that a sequel would materialize eventually. His recent light-hearted jab at Spielberg could indicate a change in his perspective once again. Could this fresh commentary be the catalyst needed to finally set the project in motion and bring Plimpton and Feldman on board? As the Goonies would say, “Keep the faith!
