Following six weeks of providing evidence and testimonies supporting the indictment of hip-hop tycoon Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is on trial for federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, he informed the judge that he won’t be choosing to testify in his own defense.
Federal prosecutors concluded their case on Tuesday afternoon, following six weeks of testimony from ex-girlfriends, personal assistants, federal agents, and members of Diddy’s former powerful media and music empire. The prosecution claims this empire was a “criminal enterprise” used for trafficking people and forcing others into prolonged sexual activities. In contrast, the defense chose not to call any witnesses after resting their case later in the afternoon. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian asked about Diddy’s condition and whether he would testify at the trial; if convicted, he could potentially receive a life sentence.
Combs informed Subramanian he’s in good shape, adding that he appreciates the latter’s fine work. He disclosed that he had a detailed discussion with his legal team about testifying, but opted not to do so.”
This version maintains the original meaning and flow while using more natural and conversational language.
He asserted that the decision was his alone, made in consultation with his legal team. To put it simply, it’s a choice he is making independently.
During the court proceedings, Judge Subramanian made sure that the defendant, Combs, had the opportunity to speak on his own behalf by directly asking him if he wished to testify. However, this was more of a formality as the judge wanted to ensure he was making independent decisions. Throughout the trial, Judge Subramanian had to reprimand Combs for communicating with the jury, which is against court protocol. On multiple instances during testimony, Combs made gestures towards jurors after a successful cross-examination; this was considered as testifying without undergoing cross-examination by the prosecution team. As a consequence, Combs was warned that he might be removed from the trial if he did not stop interacting with the jury.
On Tuesday, I pleaded with Judge Subramanian to dismiss my case, stating that the prosecution hadn’t solidified their allegations against me – it’s just part of the routine in a criminal trial. As of now, the judge hasn’t made a call on it yet.
Combs has denied guilt for five charges mentioned in the indictment, which involve sex trafficking and racketeering among others. He remains in jail without bail in Brooklyn following a decision by three judges who believe he poses a threat to public safety and may attempt to manipulate potential witnesses before the trial begins.
