Sebastian Stan Calls for Steve Rogers & Black Widow MCU Prequel Movies

As a movie critic who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I must admit that Sebastian Stan‘s ideas for MCU prequel movies have ignited a spark of excitement within me, much like the vibranium-infused shield wielded by Captain America himself.

Although the general advice that “flashbacks should be minimized” still applies, it’s an exception when Sebastian Stan proposes two compelling ideas for MCU prequel films. Stan, a familiar face in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger, has portrayed various characters over time, including a HYDRA assassin (rumored to have assassinated JFK), a secluded resident of Wakanda, and a partner to Sam Wilson during his hesitant transition into Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Despite Bucky’s promising future within the MCU as part of the new anti-hero team, the Thunderbolts, Stan remains eager to delve deeper into his character’s past.

At Comic Con Liverpool, as reported by Comic Basis, Sebastian Stan was asked about potential Marvel Cinematic Universe prequel films he’d like to see. While many fans can get worked up over sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, Stan’s suggestions were far from disappointing. “Perhaps a prequel before Captain America: The First Avenger could be interesting,” he suggested. The bond between Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) and Bucky Barnes is the longest standing in the MCU, so fans would surely welcome Evans reprising his role.

“So we could really learn, maybe more about their friendship… Their relationship.”

During his time frozen in ice, Captain America was out of action, while Bucky Barnes took on the role of The Winter Soldier. Most of what we know about his time as HYDRA’s secret assassin is shown briefly in the movie “Captain America: The Winter Solder“. However, actor Sebastian Stan has hinted at a desire for more. “Perhaps we could even create a prequel set before ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘,” he suggested, implying a deeper look into the Winter Soldier’s past exploits. This prequel might also shed light on his connection to the deadliest spy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stan further explained:

In our previous discussions, we’ve never delved into that aspect. We usually encounter him at the end of his Winter Soldier storyline. However, there was a time when he had a different identity, one in which he tutored Scarlett Johansson’s character (Natasha Romanov) on becoming the Black Widow.

Sebastian Stan Explains Thunderbolts* Most Important Detail

In the initial sneak peek for the film “Thunderbolts“, fans have been left puzzled with several queries: What does the asterisk imply? Who is Bob? And, most crucially, did Bucky casually place his vibranium arm in the dishwasher? Although Sebastian Stan can’t clarify the first two doubts, he has finally addressed the much-anticipated response regarding the latter question. In a joking manner, he said, “I believe Bucky might have glanced at the dishwasher one day and thought, ‘why not? It makes perfect sense.'” The scene beautifully encapsulates Bucky’s signature traits of constant fatigue and reluctance. Stan added further:

Initially, I found it amusing when I came across that part in the script. However, considering the time crunch towards the end, it seemed like an efficient solution. So, I believe he must have thought to just toss it in there among some remaining dishes and odds and ends, making it his idea.

In addition to Sebastian Stan, the cast of Thunderbolts includes Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Jake Schreier (known for Beef) is the director of this film, which will hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
