As Superman nears in just a few months, excitement for the rest of the DC Universe’s lineup has already taken off like a speeding train. One of the most eagerly awaited movies is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, featuring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. Fans are hunting online for any news and have shown enthusiasm so far, even catching the attention of a well-known star from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite the movie being over a year away from its release, actor Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes, generated excitement for it during his appearance at the 2024 Comic-Con Liverpool. He stated, in essence:
You know which upcoming film has me truly thrilled? It’s “Supergirl”! I believe this movie will be exceptional, given that Craig Gillepsie is the director. He’s a fantastic filmmaker, and I can hardly wait for its release.
Craig Gillespie, who is renowned for directing the critically acclaimed films “I, Tonya” (2017) featuring Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding and Ryan Cooper as her ex-husband Jeff, as well as “Lars and the Real Girl” (2007) starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Mortimer, was appointed as director of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“. This announcement was met with much enthusiasm. With Jason Momoa donning the role of beloved character Lobo, anticipation for the movie is growing even more.
So Far, James Gunn and His Team are Doing Things Right by the DCU
Following a ten-year span of the DCEU that kicked off powerfully with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” but concluded softly with the premiere of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, Gunn and Safran, are starting anew. They have been revamping the entire DCU through various films and series, such as their initial venture, “Creature Commandoes,” and the upcoming “Superman” movie which Gunn is penning and directing.
One major issue with the DCEU/Snyderverse was the absence of a genuine shared universe, similar to the MCU. As Fox and Sony were putting out movies when the MCU was gaining momentum, for the most part, their films and series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took place within the same cinematic world.
Simultaneously, Zack Snyder was creating a cinematic world with characters like Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), and others. However, there was a movie version of The Flash (Ezra Miller) that had mixed reviews, and also a popular TV show titled “The Flash” starring Grant Gustin. Additionally, we have the critically acclaimed Joker (with its less-than-favorable sequel), set in another universe. James Gunn directed the sequel to The Suicide Squad as well. However, it seems that there wasn’t much consistency across these stories.
Red Rain, created by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones. The Batman franchise is also set to continue with a sequel.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow opens June 26, 2026, and Superman will premiere on July 11, 2025.
