Following a solitary release in 2024, the 2025 Marvel movie lineup boasts three upcoming films. Although fans may be eager for Harrison Ford’s Hulk appearance or thrilled to witness Pedo Pascal entering the MCU, Sebastian Stan has sparked my excitement for Thunderbolts by drawing an unexpected comparison to an ’80s favorite, The Breakfast Club.
After securing his Golden Globe award, Sebastian Stan recently discussed with Deadline about reprising his character Bucky Barnes in this summer’s Marvel Cinematic Universe film titled “Thunderbolts”. This squad is often referred to as Marvel’s counterpart to the Suicide Squad, as it comprises a group of… technically speaking, they’re not heroes, but rather individuals who are compelled to collaborate. Stan is particularly excited about the team’s dynamics, likening the forced coexistence of these diverse characters and actors to the ensemble of misfit teens in John Hughes’ iconic comedy films. Specifically, Stan commented…
This new Marvel film stands out in a league of its own due to the unique ensemble of actors, including David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I must say, I had an exceptional experience with their performances, as they’re all witty, kind-hearted individuals who brought an undeniable chemistry to the screen. The film seems to echo the dynamics of ‘The Breakfast Club’, and I can’t wait for everyone to witness this delightful combination!
It’s unlikely I would have thought to liken Thunderbolts* to The Breakfast Club, but upon reflection, it seems plausible. Just as The Breakfast Club united five teenagers who wouldn’t typically interact under normal circumstances, Thunderbolts* is similar: a group of individuals who aren’t typically known for working well in a team.
In addition to all Marvel films having a touch of humor, Sebastian Stan hints that the upcoming film “Thunderbolts” might be the funniest addition yet, resembling the dynamic of “The Breakfast Club.” The trailer for “Thunderbolts” suggests it will be a humorous movie. While it doesn’t appear to be a traditional comedy, it seems to be leaning toward humor more than any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film before it.
Absolutely, one key distinction would be that unlike some movies, “The Breakfast Club” doesn’t feature any scenes involving cars exploding. Stan went on to explain…
The film exudes an authentic atmosphere, has a humorous touch, and maintains a sense of reality. We performed genuine stunts for real – when you see a truck explode on screen, it’s truly a blown-up vehicle, not computer-generated imagery (CGI). Marvel aimed to make this production unique by incorporating practical effects as much as possible. I believe that the use of practical elements significantly enhances the audience’s experience, as people are intelligent and can tell when something is genuine.
To be frank, as I ponder over Thunderbolts being likened to The Breakfast Club, but with superheroes (and even cars exploding), my curiosity has certainly spiked. It appears it could be quite an entertaining ride. We’ll see when the release date for Thunderbolts comes in May.
