I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the buzz surrounding Sebastian Stan! His 2025 Oscar nod is well-deserved, and it’s fascinating to see him shine as he brings a young Donald Trump to life in the movie “The Apprentice.” What an incredible achievement!
In October, Briarcliff Entertainment premiered the movie “The Apprentice“, which received a relatively quiet reception at the box office. However, it managed to secure two Academy Award nominations, one for Jeremy Strong in the category of Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the late attorney Roy Cohn. The film was also nominated in both acting categories at this year’s Golden Globes, with nods for both Stan and Strong. Unfortunately, neither actor won in their respective categories at the Globes, but Stan did win the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Film this year for his role in “A Different Man“.
Director Ali Abbasi oversaw the production of The Apprentice, a story penned by Gabriel Sherman that delves into Trump’s journey in launching his real estate empire during the 1980s within New York City with the assistance of Cohn. The ensemble cast includes Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan portraying Fred Trump Sr., Trump’s father.
The television show The Apprentice stirred up controversy following its successful debut at Cannes Film Festival in May. Trump’s legal team sent a cease-and-desist letter to the filmmakers, threatening to sue if they continued with marketing or distribution of the movie. In September, the producer of The Apprentice, Kinematics, sold its ownership share in the film. The company is financed by Trump’s friend and ex-Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder, who allegedly objected to a scene in the film where Trump is depicted raping his then-wife Ivana.
In the end, significant U.S. distributors and streaming platforms chose not to acquire The Apprentice, even with all the award buzz it generated at Cannes. The movie was released in cinemas on October 11, just under a month before the election where Trump defeated Kamala Harris, securing another term as the U.S. president.
Stan is up for the Oscar for Best Actor alongside Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, and Ralph Fiennes. They are all nominated in the same category for their respective roles in “The Brutalist”, “A Complete Unknown”, “Sing Sing”, and “Conclave”.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, held just two days prior to the election, Stan expressed his viewpoint on why he felt his movie served as an effective means of conveying a message critical of Trump.
Stan stated, “Repeating facts and information to you for thousands of hours won’t necessarily change anything. What truly matters is the experience – spending two hours with someone, understanding their perspective, and reflecting at the end, ‘Do I trust this person? Do I believe they will make a decision that benefits me or them?’
