As a seasoned movie enthusiast with over three decades of watching and analyzing films, I must say that Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” is nothing short of remarkable. While the film may have been met with controversy and distribution rejections, it is clear that Stan has poured his heart and soul into this challenging role.
The film where Stan portrayed Donald Trump in a biographical drama received much acclaim, despite not doing exceptionally well at the box office. However, the movie sparked significant controversy before its release, largely due to the former and current U.S. president. Recently, Stan has shared that since Trump’s surprising electoral win, he has faced restrictions in discussing the film – even having to cancel an episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors series because no one was willing to participate with him.
During a Q&A session following the showing of The Apprentice, Stan conversed with director Ali Abbasi about the film. He disclosed that he has encountered difficulty finding individuals who are willing to openly discuss the movie and its theme, as they are apprehensive about any potential backlash they might face. In simpler terms, Stan stated that people are hesitant to engage in conversations about the film because they fear negative repercussions for doing so.
“I’m not trying to point fingers, but there’s been a lot of praise for the film from well-known directors, actors, and writers who have watched it. Interestingly, I was invited to participate in Variety’s Actors on Actors this Friday, but I couldn’t find another actor to join me because they were hesitant to discuss the movie, so I wasn’t able to take part.
There’s no need for blame here; everyone’s okay. I’ve been fortunate enough to accomplish many wonderful things. However, if discussing this issue makes people uncomfortable or afraid, then we may encounter difficulties moving forward.
Towards the end of the day, it was verified by an editor from Variety that Stan had been given an opportunity to be on the show Actors on Actors, but he couldn’t find a suitable co-star to join him. They stated this fact.
“What Sebastian said is accurate. We invited him to participate in ‘Actors on Actors,’ the biggest franchise of awards season, but other actors didn’t want to pair with him because they didn’t want to talk about Donald Trump.”
Sebastian Stan Felt Pressure Making the Movie
Portraying a highly contentious and debated public figure such as Donald Trump undeniably brings about immense pressure, as evidenced by the numerous distribution rejections faced by the film. Trump’s legal team even tried to halt its release before it saw the light of day. Managing the responses from both supporters and detractors of the larger-than-life businessman was another challenge. For Stan, the most significant pressure lay in telling the story in a manner that transcended sensational headlines, delving into the underlying factors that made Trump the man who secured the popular vote with many Americans. He expressed:
Every moment seemed as if it were a matter of life and death due to the nature of who we’re interacting with. We’ve all grown tired of this individual, though some may not feel the same, but my role required me to scrutinize every detail. This included examining events from the 70s and 80s, understanding why he was on the cover of Time Magazine during that time, his appearances on Oprah, Larry King, GQ, and his reputation as the first contractor to hire women. The challenge for me was to help you navigate this journey with a clear perspective, taking into account not only his negative aspects but also the reasons behind these positive elements.
