Selena Gomez Talks ‘Emilia Pérez’ Oscar Buzz and Praises Co-Stars: “First Off, Did You See Zoe?”

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersing myself in various virtual worlds, I can’t help but draw parallels between my gaming journey and Selena Gomez‘s acting career, especially her role in “Emilia Pérez”. Just like how I level up my characters, learning new skills and overcoming obstacles, Gomez has taken on a challenging role that required her to learn singing, dancing, and acting.

Actresses Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Adriana Paz have previously won an ensemble best actress award for their performances in Jacques Audiard’s film “Emilia Pérez” at Cannes in May. The musical drama has also been chosen as France’s entry for the Best International Feature category at the upcoming Academy Awards. With its theatrical release scheduled for November 1st, there’s a lot of Oscar buzz surrounding the project. However, Selena Gomez, who was recently nominated for her first acting Emmy for “Only Murders in the Building”, is choosing not to get carried away by the awards speculation.

She shared with The Hollywood Reporter during the red carpet premiere of the movie in LA on Monday, “I prefer not to jump to conclusions or be overly confident,” she said. “Instead, I’ll simply express that I’m delighted by the positive response it’s getting.

In an upcoming Netflix release on November 13, Selena Gomez plays Jessi, the wife of a ruthless cartel leader named Manitas. A sudden change in his life, where he transitions and adopts the name Emilia Pérez (played by Gascón), leaves Jessi to rebuild her life from scratch. The emotions she has suppressed explode in the musical performance “Beinvenida”, a scene that Gomez performed during her audition.

She shared that she was completely taken aback by the idea the director, Jacques, wanted. He instructed her to act as if she were drunk and do whatever she wished, even throwing shoes. Surprised, she agreed. Once, she followed his instructions and he asked for more intensity. She gave it her all, standing on furniture, losing consciousness but continuing to sing passionately and dance wildly – perhaps like an overly intoxicated woman. It was a highly intense experience, but she felt privileged when he chose to keep her performance in the final cut.

As a devoted admirer, I’m talking about Gomez – a multi-talented music sensation who’s graced us with three solo albums. Her journey started remarkably early at the tender age of 10, demonstrating her knack for both choreographed singing and acting. Interestingly, despite working alongside newcomers in the genre, she humbly shared that she didn’t find it necessary to guide them through their musical performances.

Zoe didn’t require help; in fact, she seems to be the one who should receive advice instead! As for myself, I could use some tips. Ha ha, Gomez chuckled. ‘I believe,’ he said, ‘that everyone was exposed and genuine, and we did our best, even if it wasn’t perfectly polished.’

Édgar Ramírez performs a duet with Gomez in the role of Gustavo in the film, an opportunity he said he found more exciting than intimidating. “I had no idea I was going to have a little moment at being like a micro pop star next to Selena,” teased Ramírez. “It was very cute and it was real. It was a real pleasure to work with her. She’s so open, so strong and so fragile, and so vulnerable at the same time. It was really beautiful, and we both felt so safe with each other, and I think that that shows in the film, the trust that we had in each other. It was a beautiful love story in the middle of all this intensity.”

For Saldaña, playing the role of Rita, a lawyer whose life intertwines with Manitas/Emilia Pérez’s, her main challenge was to avoid hindering herself, immerse herself in Rita’s character, and grasp her journey. “It demands self-control not to judge a character as I approach it, and construct it,” she explained.

As a gamer embarking on my role, I found myself faced with an unexpected challenge: learning to sing on screen. To be honest, this wasn’t something I had ever envisioned myself doing before now. But as they say, life has a funny way of leading us where we need to go. “In the end,” I mused, “life pushes you towards what you need to learn. I never thought I’d have to learn dance or sing in my lifetime, and then life says, ‘You don’t like? Let me show you something else.’ ” I chuckled at the thought, acknowledging that I had to work hard for this skill. However, it was a rewarding experience because, as we grow older, life continues to teach us new things. We can never truly stop learning.

Even though I’ve been highly appreciated for my musical performances in the movie, when it comes to tackling similar roles, I can’t help but joke, “I’m not keen on doing more musicals. Trust me, don’t reach out with musical offers. Believe me, I apologize.

Although Gascón doesn’t share the passion for music, Ramírez most definitely does. He shared that his upcoming movie will be a musical production, and he’s thrilled about it.

Saldaña continues to entertain the idea of creating similar films in the future. “This project encompasses all the artistic passions I hold dear,” she shared. “I’m simply grateful for the opportunity to showcase my abilities more fully, and I’ll continue to do so thanks to God’s blessings.” When asked if this implies additional musical roles, Saldaña playfully suggested, “If you really want it to be so.
