As a longtime fan of Seth Meyers and his comedic prowess, I am absolutely thrilled to hear about his upcoming standup special on HBO! With his unique ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level and his knack for tackling relatable topics with humor and wit, I have no doubt that this special will be a must-watch.
Seth Meyers is bringing his comedy to HBO.
The late-night television show host is preparing to launch his upcoming standup comedy special, scheduled to air on HBO and HBO Max this autumn. This will be his inaugural project for the WarnerMedia label, recorded live in front of an audience at The Vic Theatre in Chicago back in June.
Critics claim that the show “Lobby Baby,” which was released on Netflix in 2019 and dealt with the chaotic birth of his second child among other topics, might be a topic for therapy discussions between his kids and therapists two decades from now, according to Meyers’ humorous comment made on Tuesday.
“For a long time, we’ve been ardent admirers of Seth, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with him on his debut HBO special,” expressed Nina Rosenstein, executive vice president of HBO programming for late-night and specials. “He’s an engaging narrator who has a knack for connecting with people deeply. This special is incredibly relatable and a joy to behold.”
The news emerges at a time when comedy specials are seeing increased popularity, with new players like Hulu entering the market. Despite facing larger, more volume-driven competitors, HBO has set itself apart by positioning itself as a go-to destination for high-caliber, edgy comedy. Evidenced by this, four of HBO’s latest releases, such as Alex Edelman and Ramy Youssef’s hours, have earned Emmy nominations. Five years ago, Meyer’s “Lobby Baby” also received an Emmy nod.
Meyers, who is currently nominated for an Emmy award for his late night show on NBC, continues to perform actively despite his busy TV and podcast schedules. He sells out shows in various parts of the country and shares the stage monthly with fellow late-night host and “Strike Force Five” podcaster John Oliver at New York’s Beacon Theatre. When asked earlier this year what stand-up comedy fulfills that his nightly TV show doesn’t, Meyers explained to The Hollywood Reporter: “It engages a different set of skills for me. I also believe there’s a risk when you have an exceptional writing team – you might become too reliant on their talents. To keep honing my delivery system and not let it get stale, stand-up comedy is an excellent choice.”
Neal Brennan, a veteran comedy director, is in charge of the new stand-up special from Seth Meyers. He previously worked on “Lobby Baby” and serves as an executive producer for the show. Meyers’ second hour-long comedy special, like his first, is being produced by Irwin Entertainment.
