[This story contains major spoilers from season two of Severance.]
Dan Erickson understood that the second episode of Severance season two – titled “Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig” – could not have existed without its predecessor, “Hello, Ms. Cobel”.
Friday’s release of ‘Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig,’ provides a stark contrast to ‘Hello, Ms. Cobel.’ This marks the return of Lumon’s employees to their uninterrupted lives, offering viewers something new. In this episode, it was revealed that Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) had misled his innies about the duration since their severance violation, and that he initially dismissed Dylan and Irving. Contrary to the mysterious episode titles, Patricia Arquette’s character, Harmony Cobel, was moved off the severed floor.
Erickson, the show’s creator, shares that he believes the recent episodes complement each other exceptionally well,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. Previously, he mentioned to THR his desire to experiment with the series’ structure. “I found it an intriguing method to build suspense,” he expressed.
Following the end of episode two, Erickson continued: “We had plenty of opportunities for creating suspenseful moments, and it turned out that these could be effectively resolved in the second episode.
In the farewell scene between Mr. Selvig and Mrs. Selvig, we were introduced to Helena Eagan for the first time, which only deepened the enigma surrounding her innie’s questionable identity and her outie’s role in the Lumon conspiracy. As Erickson explained to The Hollywood Reporter, “We like to build mysteries upon mysteries. Imagine a pyramid where with each season, we answer some questions but that reveals a larger mystery lurking beneath.
Towards the close of the episode, Mark Scout, portrayed by Adam Scott, swiftly dodges Mrs. Selvig’s sliding car. She speeds off angrily following his query, “What’s going on here? Do you have any information about Gemma?
Despite not revealing the answer this week, Erickson encourages fans to stick around for more. “You’re going to get a feel for the real life that Gemma has been living in, and a deeper understanding of the experiences she’s gone through,” he shared about his favorite part of season two. “We’ve only seen a small piece of it so far, and I believe people will be eager to see what we’ve prepared.
