As we approach the 2025 TV schedule, eager anticipation builds for the second season of Severance, marking nearly three years since I found myself exclaiming at the screen (much like Mark Scout’s Innie) after one of the most gripping cliffhangers in television history. The return of this sci-fi drama promises to shed light on the fate of the macrodata refiners post their excursion beyond the Lumon severed floor, and perhaps unravel the enigma behind those curious baby goats! However, the question remains: can the second season match the brilliance of the first? With critics having already screened the 10-episode season, we’ll soon find out what they have to say.
The delay in releasing Season 2 of “Severance” can be attributed to Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson’s pursuit of perfection. However, with the exciting new cast members and tantalizing glimpses we’ve been given, I’m eager to put aside the last three years of anticipation for the fresh episodes ahead. Now, let’s dive into the reviews, which I promise will be spoiler-free, as there’s still time to subscribe to Apple TV+ and catch up on Season 1! Jeremy Mathai from SlashFilm gives Season 2 an 8 out of 10, describing it as “darker, more ambitious, and as confounding as ever.” In his review, Mathai notes that the series continues to be as enigmatic as always.
The second season significantly surpasses itself by broadening its storytelling dimensions and grandeur. With an impressive 14 Emmy nominations and widespread critical praise, the show has ample room to breathe, yet it makes swift use of a larger budget to take even bolder risks. It’s hard to find fault in a season that offers indelible visuals such as baby goats secreted away in the darkest corners of an office complex, a surreal waffle gathering climaxing in a dance performance veiled by eerie masks, or the ominous interrogation room dubbed The Break Room. Remarkably, this season manages to set even higher standards without ever losing the essence that made the series so captivating from the start.
According to Nicole Gallucci from Decider, her anticipation had grown quite high during the three-year gap between Severance episodes, but there’s no sign of a second-season slump. Instead, the new season delivers even more impact than before, as powerful as Page 197 (you know your stuff). Gallucci goes on to praise that the next installment in the Lumon employees’ tale expertly expands upon an almost flawless first season.
The ten-episode season significantly escalates the tension, challenges allegiances, and imaginatively broadens the narrative of Severance in a manner that exceeds even the most extravagant viewer expectations – and importantly, their darkest fears. As our cherished Dylan puts it this season, ‘This is so many layers of disturbing.’ This season delves into previously unexplored levels of the building, ventures off-campus to shed light on the enigmatic history of the biotech company, and in doing so, expands upon Lumon’s chilling backstory, unveiling new aspects of its sinister activities.
According to Carly Lane from Collider, the second season of “Severance” receives an exceptional score of 10 out of 10. She suggests that the series could very well end up as one of the top shows in 2025. The show skillfully addresses questions while simultaneously introducing new enigmas, leaving viewers to ponder certain standalone episodes for extended periods. In her own words:
Season 2 of this show addresses any remaining doubts of viewers with its amazing cinematography, excellent acting, and intriguing, captivating mysteries. This evolving, mind-bending sequel, skillfully created by Erickson and writers Mohamad El Masri, Wei-Ning Yu, Anna Ouyand Moench, Erin Wagoner, Mark Friedman, and Adam Countee, makes it clear that Severance is a remarkable achievement in television, showing that the most compelling stories are always worth the wait.
Alison Herman thinks Season 2 was worth the three-year wait because it offers more insights into the Outies’ lives, going beyond Adam Scott’s character, Mark, and brings back the goats from last season, as per her review.
So long as Severance provides these intriguing, uncanny elements, it’s simple to set aside skepticism and curiosity for specific details. Regardless of its ultimate goal, the narrative skillfully portrays the arbitrary regulations and segmented structure of contemporary workplaces more effectively than anything else on television. Moreover, a significant concern is alleviated: upon finishing Season 2, I finally understand the mystery surrounding the goats.
According to Angie Han from The Hollywood Reporter, the second season of the upcoming Apple TV+ series is expected to be more somber compared to the first, with reduced amounts of humor and a greater emphasis on the intense drama surrounding a ruthless corporation that bears an unsettling resemblance to real-life business practices. In other words, Han suggests that the new season will be less lighthearted and more focused on the harsh realities portrayed in the series.
The inconsistent plotline can be a tad tiresome to watch – not so bad as to make an engaged audience abandon ship, but enough to elicit sighs of exasperation when a suspenseful moment is prolonged for additional weeks, or murmurs of doubt about whether all the unanswered questions will eventually be clarified. (I’m still unsure where it’s heading.) Unfortunately, this inconsistency seems to diminish some of the charming character interactions that made the initial season so appealing, especially among the members of MDR.
It’s been awhile since we’ve received any answers regarding Mark’s wife’s situation, the nature of Lumon’s Microdada Refinement division, and numerous other questions. The long wait is finally coming to an end as Severance Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ this Friday, January 17th.
