For quite some time now, since the second season of “Severance” was announced, I find myself brimming with curiosity about what lies ahead. As we inch closer to the much-anticipated debut of Season 2 on the 2025 TV lineup, my intrigue has grown into a torrent of specific questions, and one that I’d like to delve into immediately revolves around Britt Lower’s character, Helly.
Based on the finale of “Severance” Season 1, it’s clear that Helly’s outer self, Helena, is an Eagan. This fact alone makes me ponder several questions. However, her recent remarks about her character’s development this season and the “envy” she’ll experience for herself have sparked a particular curiosity in me: who, exactly, is harboring that jealousy?
What Britt Lower Said About Helly’s Innie And Outie
Approaching the January 17 debut of the captivating Apple TV+ series “Severance”, the show has been sharing behind-the-scenes clips featuring cast discussions on their characters. Among them, a video focusing on Helly particularly piqued my curiosity, as Britt Lower shared insights about her character’s inner and outer selves:
During this current period, Helly and Helena embark on distinct yet synchronous adventures… Observing a version of herself who appears to be far freer stirs up feelings of jealousy within her.
Currently, the video you’re about to view seems to reveal both Helly’s navel (in-belly button) and her belly button (out-belly button). Here it is:
Moreover, we’re aware that Helena joined the Severance program and currently works at Lumon due to being an Egan. We witnessed Helly stepping foot in the world outside during the final moments of Season 1. These two spheres of her life couldn’t be more contrasting; Helena is a significant corporate figure, while Helly is defiant and firmly rooted on the severed floor. Yet, as Lower mentioned, both her inner and outer selves will embark on “distinct yet concurrent journeys” in Season 2.
So, that makes me wonder: Will both Helly and Helena feel envy toward each other?
So, Will Both Versions Of Helly Envy Each Other?
In the videos played as Lower spoke, it appeared as if Helena was observing Helly at work. This suggests that she may be monitoring what her twin is doing. As a result, it’s likely that she is well-informed about her twin’s life. Frankly, I believe she has cause to feel jealous of her.
It appears from Season 1 that being an Egan, particularly for Helena, holds significant importance and likely consumes most of her time. Given that the corporation is both large and a family business, the responsibilities and pressures on someone in such a position would presumably be much greater. This stark contrast between Helena’s current role and her innie’s (inner Helena) fiery independence makes me ponder if she ever misses that aspect of her life.
From another perspective, it’s quite evident that Helly isn’t free in a literal sense; she’s confined to the floor that’s been separated from the rest. She puts forth significant effort to demonstrate her discomfort with this situation. Therefore, the notion of being out and having full control over one’s life – something I believe she perceives Helena as enjoying – might stir feelings of envy in her.
Intriguingly, I find the parallel paths in these stories captivating, suggesting a shared aspect which might be the envy Mark Scott mentioned. I’m eager to uncover this mystery when the highly-anticipated second season of Severance premieres on Apple TV+ on January 17. This will hopefully shed light on the question and more, for those who wish to watch it.
