James Gunn, in a previous statement, made it clear that DC Studios wouldn’t approve projects until he was satisfied with a completed script that pleased both him and the studio. This policy has already triggered waves in various projects, resulting in the postponement of Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman and the scrapping of one undisclosed DC Universe project.
One movie that has faced numerous challenges is “Sgt. Rock,” which initially lost actor Daniel Craig, best known for playing James Bond, as its title character. Furthermore, there were rapid rumors suggesting its cancellation soon after Craig’s departure, making it the initial setback in James Gunn’s DCU.
It’s good news that larger media outlets debunked the rumor and verified that Sgt. Rock was not ending, with production simply delayed until summer 2026. However, this didn’t prevent fans from expressing concerns about its future survival until then.
Following Gunn’s announcement about the scrapping of a DC Universe film, there were whispers among fans that perhaps the project could have been “Sgt. Rock” being put on hold. With no further news since the sudden halt in filming, this speculation seems plausible.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, they asked James Gunn about the progress of the Sgt. Rock project, wondering if it would still hit theaters. In reassuring news for fans, Gunn stated that the project is in a “satisfactory condition” and continues to advance. He added that while it wasn’t quite where he envisioned creatively, some adjustments are necessary: it needs “a slight tweak.
Things are generally going well for us, but there’s room for improvement. We’re progressing, but at the moment, creatively speaking, things aren’t quite where I hoped they’d be. Hence, some adjustments are needed.
Given that the release has already been postponed until next summer, I find it unlikely that Gunn and DC Studios would require additional time for these minor adjustments. Therefore, it seems rather unexpected if the production of Sgt. Rock faces another delay.
What Could Be Holding Up Sgt. Rock?
After Daniel Craig declined the role of Franklin John Rock, DC Studios swiftly moved forward and pursued Colin Farrell. As of now, it remains unclear if Farrell has agreed to take on the role.
Irrespective of who ends up as the cast members in this war movie, it’s clear that the key point of contention is unquestionably the script. As of now, it hasn’t managed to meet Gunn’s lofty standards as seen in projects like Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Clayface. It remains a mystery what might be causing Gunn to hesitate before proceeding with pre-production, but it seems that the issues aren’t substantial since only minor adjustments are required according to “a little bit.
Connectivity with the rest of the DCU isn’t really a problem for Sgt. Rock and Easy Company, as they’ve already made an appearance in Creature Commandos alongside GI Robot. Yet, this might not be enough to captivate all audiences, given that not everyone has watched the mature animated series on HBO Max.
In an earlier version of events, as a follower, I would have been part of Easy Company, embarking on an adventure reminiscent of Indiana Jones. Our mission would be intertwined with the French Resistance, seeking the Spear of Destiny – a historical artifact that was used to pierce Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. The objective was to find and secure this relic before the Nazis could get their hands on it. However, production delays altered these initial plans.
One potential alteration to the screenplay might involve the MacGuffin that Rock and Easy Company are pursuing. Instead of the Spear of Destiny, it could be an artifact more closely linked to another DC property, such as Themyscira, which ties in with the upcoming “Paradise Lost” series. This change would create a connection to a well-known character like Wonder Woman, potentially drawing in a larger audience.
