As a budding filmmaker, I find myself deeply inspired by the trinity of Hindi cinema – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan. Each of these stars, in their unique ways, have been my gurus, guiding lights in my journey through the labyrinthine world of Indian cinema.
In an interview with PTI, film director Sohum Shah, famously known for his work on Tumbbad, openly expresses a profound respect for actors Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan. He refers to this trio as the last remaining “superstars” in Hindi cinema, and even goes so far as to call them his gurus, likening them to the deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Through their work, he has gained valuable insights and knowledge.
Shah openly shared that his journey into the entertainment world was sparked by admiration for Shah Rukh Khan, whom he continues to greatly respect. However, he emphasized that while they share a common name, their life journeys are distinctively unique. He acknowledged that there can only be one Shah Rukh Khan and highlighted that despite his captivating charm, he too has been individually molded by fate. Shah made it clear that he is content with not being SRK and doesn’t strive to emulate him. Laughing, he pointed out the immense pressure Khan faces, even having to step outside of Mannat just to greet his fans.
He stated, “SRK, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan are my three mentors, symbolizing Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.” “I learned grace and the essence of being a man from Shah Rukh Khan’s guidance. There is no one else who possesses charm quite like Shah Rukh Khan.
During Shah’s formative years, Salman also played a significant role. As he recounted, “At our house, you would find only two sets of clothes. When I was in college, my brother was visiting Jaipur. He was asked to bring me jeans because I had admired the style Salman Khan wore.
Shah compared Aamir Khan to the character Dronacharya, recognizing Khan’s substantial influence on Tumbbad. He elaborated that Khan’s method, which entails committing six or seven years to a single venture, resonates strongly with him. Shah stated that he adopts Khan’s philosophy, which is to concentrate on one undertaking and complete it meticulously.
I myself acknowledge that Kiran Rao, Aamir’s ex-wife and the presenter of Ship of Theseus – a project where Aamir stepped into the producer role for the first time – has significantly impacted my work approach. Similar to Aamir, I firmly adhere to his straightforward philosophy: diligently doing quality work is inherently rewarding, a concept that, regrettably, I find many tend to underestimate.
