Shah Rukh Khan took nap on bus floor during Dil Se shoot, recalls Tigmanshu Dhulia; says he never objected to people going over him

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but be captivated by stories that delve into the life experiences of the legendary Shah Rukh Khan. His humility and dedication to his craft are truly inspiring. The anecdote shared by Tigmanshu Dhulia about SRK taking naps on the floor of a bus during the Dil Se shoot, despite the constant hustle and bustle around him, is a testament to his unparalleled work ethic and down-to-earth nature.

In 1989, Shah Rukh Khan kicked off his acting journey with the TV series “Fauji.” Following stints in shows like “Circus” and “Dil Dariya,” SRK made his film debut alongside Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti in “Deewana” in 1992. During his early days, movies such as “Darr,” “Anjaam,” and “Baazigar” solidified him as a prominent figure in Bollywood. Recently, director-actor Tigmanshu Dhulia reminisced about Shah Rukh Khan taking a nap on the bus floor during the shoot of “Dil Se,” and he never complained when people walked over him.

During an interview with Mashable India, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia revealed that Shah Rukh Khan often slept on the bus floor while filming Dil Se because there were no luxury vans available for rest. Dhulia, who collaborated with SRK for the first time in Mani Ratnam’s 1998 production, reminisced about their shooting experience in Ladakh, where they traveled by road.

Reflecting on the bus we traveled in while filming Dil Se, he mentioned, “During lunch breaks, Shah Rukh Khan would often take a 30-minute nap at a designated walking area. Meanwhile, the crew and I had items in the bus, so we’d frequently go in and out. Sometimes, we even disturbed him to grab a jacket or other things, yet he was always gracious about it.

Tigmanshu Dhulia recollected an instance where Shah Rukh Khan didn’t prevent anyone from boarding the bus even during his nap hours. Dhulia went on to say that as the lead actor of the movie, he had the right to refuse entry. Yet, Tigmanshu pointed out that if Shah Rukh wanted a 30-minute rest, he should have been undisturbed; however, this wasn’t the case during filming.

For those unfamiliar, Tigmanshu Dhulia made a short appearance at the box office in the Shah Rukh Khan-led film Dil Se, and even contributed dialogue to the movie. The 1998 romantic thriller featured Manisha Koirala as the leading actress, who was romantically involved with Dhulia’s character. Preity Zinta, who debuted in Mani Ratnam’s directorial project, took on a supporting role in this film.

In retrospect, I had the privilege of teaming up with Shah Rukh Khan in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s 2018 production, Zero, where I took on the role of his character’s father.
