As a long-time admirer of Sharon Stone, her recent remarks at the Turin Film Festival resonated deeply with me. Her words, laced with wisdom and insight, were reminiscent of a seasoned actress who’s seen it all – from Hollywood’s glitz to its grit.
At the Turin Film Festival in Italy, Sharon Stone vocalized strong criticisms against the re-election bid of Donald Trump.
The actress famed for her roles in “Casino” and “Basic Instinct,” was part of a discussion alongside Angelina Jolie. As the conversation veered towards politics, she was questioned about her views on the International Day aimed at ending Violence against Women, an honor she had been bestowed with the festival’s Stella della Mole prize.
She remarked, as reported by The Guardian, “Italy has experienced fascism in the past.” She continued, “We Italians understand the consequences of such events. You, my fellow audience members, have witnessed similar occurrences. My country is currently going through a phase of adolescence. Adolescence can be arrogant, thinking it knows all the answers, yet it’s also naive and ignorant. We are in this ignorant, arrogant stage.
Stone also expressed his respect for the outcome of the election, acknowledging that while he might not personally agree with the president, he recognizes the importance and function of the position within our democratic system. As for predicting future events, he humbly admits that he’s not clairvoyant; he simply doesn’t know if there will be a shift towards authoritarianism or not. He points out that there are 200 individuals in government who need to win over the support of 200 million people in society, a process unlikely to unfold overnight.
Referring to Kamala Harris’s loss, Stone questioned: “Given that we only saw her for three months and had just one televised debate, could we truly understand her? Was she the right fit… I can’t confirm.” Regarding his own political aspirations, Stone stated bluntly, “Politics for me? Absolutely not!
Stone’s popular comments echoed some comparable remarks made by Alec Baldwin a few days prior at the Turin Film Festival. Baldwin attended the festival to accept its Lifetime Achievement Award. (paraphrased)
He stated, “You’re aware of what’s happening based on news reports, but the dissemination of information in America is largely influenced by profit motives. It operates like a business, which is why critical global issues often go unaddressed. Many Americans are left uninformed about crucial matters such as climate change and Ukraine. This void is partly filled by the film industry, through documentaries and narrative films.
