Shatrughan Sinha is 'biologically incapable of being on time', says Sharmila Tagore; 'he was late to his own wedding'

As a devoted admirer of Bollywood’s timeless divas, I must say that hearing stories about the legends of yesteryears always brings a smile to my face. The anecdotes about Sharmila Tagore and her experiences with the likes of Shatrughan Sinha are simply priceless!

Sharmila Tagore has collaborated with several prominent figures in Bollywood such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Shashi Kapoor, among others. This extensive experience allows her unique insights into the quirks of these senior actors. In a recent interview, this esteemed actress disclosed that Sinha is “naturally prone to being tardy,” and further shared that he was late for his own wedding.

During an interview with The Indian Express, Sharmila Tagore reminisced about Shatrughan Sinha’s tendency to arrive late on film sets. This conversation took place in 1980, during the shooting of the movie Dostana. Unlike Amitabh Bachchan, who was known for his punctuality after Shashi Kapoor, Tagore acknowledged that Sinha was the exact opposite in this regard.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In my line of work, I’ve encountered many fascinating personalities, and Shatrughan Sinha is one who stands out for his unique punctuality challenges. It was common knowledge on sets that he would often arrive late, even to the point of being fashionably tardy for his own wedding. Jokingly, I’d say he has a biological predisposition towards running behind schedule. During the filming of Dostana, we adjusted our shooting hours from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Intriguingly, at precisely 2 p.m., when Big B was wrapping up, Mr. Sinha’s car would arrive – a punctuality pattern as predictable as the rising sun.

Saif Ali Khan’s mother reminisced that the film starred Zeenat Aman, who made arrangements to suit Saif’s schedule. Notably, Raj Khosla, the director, humorously commented that he might have lost his hair during the film’s production due to this. Additionally, Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor had conflicting schedules, which is why they rarely appeared together in the same scene of the 1980 blockbuster movie.

Regardless of circumstances, the filmmaker was obligated to produce the movie. Consequently, the director resorted to employing a stand-in for certain shots and filmed from behind, with the stand-in’s head visible in those scenes. It turns out that Shatrughan enjoyed doing this as a pastime, she revealed, stating that he was not cruel but an exceptional individual. However, punctuality wasn’t his strong suit, as he lacked the genetic disposition for it.

Currently on her professional journey, Sharmila Tagore recently appeared in Rahul V. Chittella’s family drama titled Gulmohar. This film also featured Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth. Notably, it was honored with the Best Feature Film in Hindi at the 70th National Film Awards, along with other accolades.
