Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost Is a Bloody Sitcom Dad in Krazy House

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s seen more films than I care to remember, I must confess that my British roots have a soft spot for the unique blend of humor and horror that Nick Frost has brought to the screen since his breakout role in “Shaun of the Dead.” However, after watching the trailer for “Krazy House,” I’m afraid my excitement was more akin to anticipation for a rollercoaster ride that might leave me with whiplash.

In a unique twist, it’s the Dutch who offer us an eccentric satire of ’90s sitcoms, transforming into a horrifying ordeal for Nick Frost, star of “Shaun of the Dead”, and his clumsy clan. This is the basis for the upcoming horror-comedy, “Krazy House”, set to arrive on all Video On Demand platforms from October 4. The film also features Alicia Silverstone and Kevin Connolly in its star-studded cast.

Nick Frost’s Return to Horror-Comedy Has Not Impressed Critics

Nick Frost, who made his mark in the 2004 movie “Shaun of the Dead,” is often associated with the horror-comedy genre, even though he’s scarcely starred in these types of films. Since then, he’s had numerous roles in movies and TV shows, but only a few can be classified as horror-comedies. Lately, he’s shifted his focus to voice acting. In 2021, he contributed his voice to no fewer than five animated films, one of which is the Netflix sci-fi comedy “Extinct,” where he portrayed Captain Robert FitzRoy.

In a departure that harks back to his roots, “Krazy House” finds director Jamie Stewart venturing into horror-comedy territory once more since 2018’s “Slaughterhouse Rulez”. However, the reception for this new offering has been rather unfavorable, echoing the lukewarm response to its predecessor. The movie made its debut in the Midnight section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and currently boasts a dismal 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert.com described it as “disappointingly empty,” while Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting went so far as to label “Krazy House” as “gratingly annoying”.

Although the news seems generally positive, it’s worth noting some particularly enthusiastic responses. Ty Cooper from HeyUGuys predicts that Nick Frost’s latest project could become a “cult classic,” while Norman Gidney from HorrorBuzz describes it as “the most mind-blowing thing I’ve ever seen at Sundance.” Of course, these comments are meant to be praiseworthy.

Similar to many horror-comedies available today, the movie “Krazy House” seems to be sparking debate among fans, being labeled as a film that people will either adore or dislike with little middle ground. From the trailer, it looks like an entertaining watch with a generous helping of social commentary for flavor, but ultimately, your opinion remains undecided until you see “Krazy House” yourself when it premieres on VOD from Splendid Films on October 4.
