Shawn Levy Breaks Down The Big Goal For His Star Wars Movie, And I'm Hoping Disney Doesn't Mess With It

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I am genuinely excited about Shawn Levy‘s upcoming Star Wars movie. His commitment to creating an organic and standalone story within the expansive Star Wars universe is not only refreshing but also a testament to his creativity and understanding of what makes this franchise special.

Among the upcoming slate of Star Wars films, one in development is conceived by Shawn Levy, known for producing Free Guy, The Adam Project, and the latest Marvel film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine. Unlike The Mandalorian & Grogu from 2026 or Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey movie and James Mangold’s Jedi origins project, details about Levy’s Star Wars movie remain a mystery. However, he has revealed his ambitious vision for the film, and I sincerely hope that Disney preserves it intact.

In his latest interview on Happy Sad Confused, most of the conversation revolved around Deadpool and Wolverine as expected. However, during the closing segments, director/writer Levy shared some updates about his Star Wars movie. When Josh Horowitz inquired about what he admires in the galaxy-spanning franchise, Levy began by expressing:

The process of creating this story has led me to ponder about that topic, as there’s a limit to how many times the Star Wars movies can delve into the same period of time. I aim to avoid making a film that is repetitive or serves another movie. Instead, I wanted to create something that resonated authentically with my personal style and characters.

For approximately half a century, the Star Wars franchise has been weaving an intricate tapestry of stories. While the cinematic saga is commonly known as the Skywalker Saga, recent Star Wars TV shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka – which are accessible through a Disney+ subscription – have been delving into the franchise’s rich mythology. Although some level of connection has always been present, as seen in the surprise cameos in The Acolyte Season 1 finale, other series like these have gone further by referencing earlier works such as The Clone Wars and Rebels. This deep-dive approach can make it challenging for viewers who have only watched the Star Wars movies to fully grasp the connections.

According to Shawn Levy’s remarks, his upcoming “Star Wars” movie seems to be designed as a self-contained story, while still maintaining the essential themes of the series. This approach should make it accessible for both dedicated fans and those who are less familiar with the franchise. Furthermore, he noted:

To me, it seems undeniable that there exists an underlying power and a link to something greater than ourselves as individuals, and this connection holds immense potential for strength. The blending of these ideas with aesthetic beauty and dreams realized is what defines Star Wars in my view.

It’s intriguing to hear a bit more detail about Shawn Levy’s plans for his Star Wars film, and it could be exciting to see how new characters he might introduce could expand on another part of the universe, similar to how the show Andor is delving into Diego Luna’s character’s life before Rogue One. However, we may not get specific details about Levy’s movie for quite some time, and only if the project actually takes off. Keep in mind that many movies announced or reported during the Disney era didn’t ultimately come to fruition.

Currently, I’m thrilled to witness Shawn Levy’s directorial and writing prowess unfold in the big screen adaptations of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” now playing in cinemas near you. On a future date, May 22, 2026, the galaxy far, far away will captivate us once more with the premiere of “The Mandalorian & Grogu” within the Star Wars universe.
