Henry Cavill went all-in with his brief appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” by Marvel, reportedly even falling ill after indulging in cigars as part of his character portrayal, as stated by director Shawn Levy.

In a recent conversation with The New York Times, the movie director disclosed that Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, felt nauseated after he inhaled cigar fumes for a full eight hours during the filming of his brief role as Cavillrine, a Wolverine substitute.

“During the entire filming day, not only did he possess a well-built muscular physique, but he also held a lit cigar in his mouth continuously,” Levy recounted. “I found out later that Henry felt unwell due to inhaling cigar smoke for eight straight hours, yet he never once showed any signs of weakness.”

In the given scene, Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, encounters a version of Wolverine known as Cavillrine during his journey across the multiverse to find other incarnations of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine for team-up purposes. Unlike all the others, Cavillrine was not played by Jackman himself.

“Could I draw your attention to the fact that Ryan cleverly called Henry Cavill’s character ‘the Cavillrine’, as Levy mentioned?”

The director additionally pointed out that the selection of Cavill allowed them to make a nod towards the surprising news from 2022, when it became clear that the actor would no longer portray Superman in the upcoming DC universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“Levy stated that following the events involving DC and Henry’s dismissal as Superman, it wasn’t too long before. Since Deadpool is always in tune with popular culture, this situation presented a fantastic chance. Firstly, it was an opportunity to cast Henry Cavill in a role where he would truly excel, but also to make fun of that other movie studio based on comic books and inject some self-awareness into the mix.”

In the year prior, it became known that David Corenswet would take up the role of the iconic superhero for the forthcoming “Superman” movie, slated for release on July 11, 2025.

In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Cavill was one of several unexpected cameos, alongside Chris Evans reprising his role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Jennifer Garner playing Elektra, and Wesley Snipes portraying Blade. Channing Tatum takes on the character Gambit, while Blake Lively assumes the role of Lady Deadpool.
