As a long-time fan of Shawn Mendes, witnessing his growth both as an artist and a person has been truly inspiring. His courage to openly discuss his sexuality is commendable, especially considering the scrutiny he’s faced since his early days in the industry.
Shawn Mendes is getting candid about his sexuality.
During a performance at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on Monday, the artist shared personal aspects of himself with his audience, including a sneak peek of his new track “The Mountain,” whose lyrics touch upon the discussions around his sexuality.
Sometimes, when performing, Mendes croons, as captured on TikTok, ‘Some days, I might change my mind.’ He’s open to all sorts of feedback, like ‘I think you’re too young,’ or ‘Maybe you’re too old.’ He even accepts comments about his preference in gender, such as ‘You only date girls’ or ‘You prefer boys.’ Whatever your perspective, he’s ready for it.
Later in the For Friends and Family Tour, the artist behind “Stitches” contributed their thoughts to the discussion during the performance.
From a young age, there’s been a discussion surrounding my sexuality, one that has persisted for quite some time,” Mendes expressed in a TikTok video. “I find it rather amusing because I believe sexuality is an incredibly intricate and complex aspect of a person, not something that can easily be confined within labels. It’s always felt like an invasion into something deeply personal to me, something I was still trying to understand about myself, something that I continue to explore.
As the “Treat You Better” vocalist, I’ve decided to open up more, so I can bridge the gap and connect with all of you even closer.
Mendes openly shared with his followers that he’s still exploring aspects of his life, particularly his sexuality, much like many others. He admits there are moments of uncertainty and fear due to societal expectations. He’s working up the courage to embrace his humanity and feelings, and for now, that’s all he wishes to express on this matter.
Over the years, Mendes, who will be releasing his self-titles album on November 15th, has had an on-again, off-again relationship with Camila Cabello.
Back in 2020, the musician who is known for “If I Can’t Have You” shared his thoughts on the topic of his sexuality during an episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert.
Mendes expressed frustration because some individuals in his life who were extremely close to him were secretly gay. He felt a strong anger towards these people, acknowledging that it’s a complex issue. He wanted to say things like ‘I’m not gay, but if I were, it would be okay,’ but he was unsure of how to react to the situation because he also believed there’s nothing wrong with being gay.
