Shea Whigham Shares Reaction to Final ‘Mission: Impossible’ Movie

As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the cinematic world, I can confidently say that the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is bound to be a thrilling spectacle. With Tom Cruise at the helm and Christopher McQuarrie directing, it’s hard not to expect greatness. And with the addition of Shea Whigham, who has proven his acting chops in projects like “Boardwalk Empire,” I am confident that this film will deliver an exceptional performance.

It’s astonishing that Tom Cruise continues to produce critically-acclaimed “Mission: Impossible” movies, nearly three decades after the initial modern mission captivated audiences. With the “final showdown” approaching soon, fans of the series are definitely eager: The trailer for the eighth Mission: Impossible film garnered an impressive 17 million views in just two days on YouTube. Joining Cruise in this upcoming installment is esteemed actor Shea Whigham, who has been quite active with various projects lately. MovieWeb interviewed Whigham ahead of the release of his latest film, “Lake George,” which premieres this week. During their conversation, Whigham discussed “Mission: Impossible – The Final Showdown,” where he reprises his character Jasper Briggs.

“I think it’s going to be amazing. I really do, because of [Tom] and [director Christopher] McQuarrie there… I’ve got to be careful. I can’t give away too much. I get in trouble. I’ve gotten in trouble already. I think one of the great things is just to be around these guys that love cinema. I mean, Tom, there’s nothing phony about him when he says how much he loves and he wants people to come to see movies… There’s a reason why they’re getting better. Each Mission gets better.”

Whigham further noted a similarity between his on-screen partner, Tom Cruise, during their work on “Mission: Impossible,” and his equally exceptional co-star, Carrie Coon, in “Lake George.

“I have a knack for this… I’ll give my best performances when the cameras aren’t rolling, whether it’s for Carrie or Tom. If they reciprocate that generosity while acting together, that’s when you get something really impactful and relatable. That’s what makes [Lake George] a great show to watch – it’s deep, it’s lighthearted, and it catches you off-guard in the best ways, making you care for those characters.

The “Charisma” of Carrie Coon

As a cinephile, I found myself immersed in the gripping tale of “Lake George.” In this film, I step into the shoes of Don, a man freshly released from federal prison after serving time as an ex-con. My former mob boss, Glenn Fleshler, gives me an intriguing job offer: to eliminate my ex-lover and business partner, Phyllis, portrayed by the supremely talented Carrie Coon. However, as is often the case in life, things don’t go as planned, leading to a surprising partnership between Don and Phyllis. Working alongside Carrie Coon was an incredible experience; her acting prowess is undeniable, and if you haven’t seen her stunning performance in “The Leftovers,” I highly recommend it.

Carrie is exceptionally thoughtful towards me in unique ways. I share a similar bond with her. It’s important to me that she receives the recognition she deserves as an actress. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what a ‘character actress’ is, but I believe Carrie fits this role perfectly. She excels at portraying complex characters, and if there’s a more impressive performance out there currently — I must admit I’ve seen many — I haven’t come across it.

Whigham described his co-star from their time on Season 3 of Fargo as having a captivating charm. He went on to say that her performance in Lake George was more reminiscent of Carrie, showcasing both quirky and energetic traits, as if she’s filled with radiant energy. But she also has a deep thoughtfulness and attentiveness, which is rare in today’s film industry and essential for on-camera work. Magnolia Pictures will release Lake George in theaters and digitally on December 6, while Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will hit theaters on May 23, 2025.
