Shekhar Kapur slams OTT platform for editing Bandit Queen ‘without his permission’; ‘Would they have guts to cut a Chris Nolan film…’

More recently, Shekhar Kapur voiced criticism towards an online streaming service for editing “Bandit Queen” without his consent. Expressed through frustration, he criticized the negligence of a director’s creative intent and posed the question: Would a Christopher Nolan movie ever encounter such unauthorized changes?

More recently, Shekhar Kapur voiced his displeasure on a platform previously known as Twitter, criticizing changes to “Bandit Queen” on an OTT service without his approval. In a post, he questioned Sudhir Mishra, “If OTT platforms allowed me to produce #BanditQueen as I did years ago, would they still do so today? The version of ‘Bandit Queen’ available on Amazon Prime bears little resemblance to my original film.

He remarked, “It’s been altered so drastically that it’s unrecognizable, and it still bears my title as Director. Yet, no one consulted me about it! Are we considered inferior directors compared to those in the West? Would they dare to edit a Chris Nolan film without his consent?

The conversation began as Shekhar commended the Netflix miniseries ‘Adolescence’ on platform X. This sparked a reply from filmmaker Sudhir Mishra who suggested that producing such projects independently could be the key to progress, highlighting the importance of having the liberty to delve into narratives without limitations.

Kunal Kohli, a filmmaker, shared his thoughts on the controversy, expressing his astonishment over the OTT platform modifying Bandit Queen. In response to his post, he stated that while Shekhar’s current Hollywood successes may offer him creative autonomy, the Kapur prior to Bandit Queen would not have been permitted to make the film according to his own wishes. He found the unauthorized editing of the movie to be nothing short of astounding.

Besides expressing similar sentiments as Shekhar Kapur, Hansal Mehta expressed his own disappointment, questioning if the entertainment industry truly encourages unique storytelling or just mass-produces common content. He also pointed out a perceived prejudice towards Western filmmakers.

For those who may not know, Bandit Queen is a biographical drama that tells the story of Phoolan Devi’s life. Seema Biswas gives an exceptional performance in the main role. In 1995, this film won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film and was selected as India’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 67th Academy Awards, although it did not receive a nomination.
