As a devoted fan of Shelley Duvall, witnessing her final screen role in “The Forest Hills” was nothing short of poignant and profound. Her return to horror after decades away, particularly following her iconic performance in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, “The Shining,” felt like a reunion with an old friend.
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I’m sharing some exciting news about one of my favorite actresses – Shelley Duvall. Her last performance, in the low-budget horror flick titled “The Forest Hills,” has been given a heartfelt endorsement by Dan Gilroy, who’s not just any director but her longtime life partner.
According to Gilroy (age 77), it took some time for Shelley to embrace this role. However, eventually, she came to view it as a means of linking back to her film industry heritage.
On July 11, at the age of 75, duvet (Duvall) passed away. The recently released film on October 4 and now streaming, signifies Duvall’s comeback to horror genre since his chilling performance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece, The Shining, often hailed as one of the best horror films ever created.
Under the direction of Scott Goldberg, the movie Forest Hills initially planned a brief appearance from Duvall. However, his role was subsequently expanded, and filming took place between 2022 and 2023 at locations near both Duvall’s and Gilroy’s residences in Blanco, Texas, where the scenes were ultimately captured.
Despite having advanced diabetes, Duvall managed to give a polished and attentive performance.
According to Gilroy, the team’s exceptional kindness, appreciation, and near-worship of her achievements, left her feeling at ease. For the first time in a long while, she found herself smiling and chuckling.
Duvall came back into the spotlight following a 20-year hiatus, with a feature about her appearing in THR (The Hollywood Reporter) in 2020. It was during the filming of 1990’s “Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme” for Disney Channel that she met Gilroy and stayed together until her passing.
“She would always say, ‘I am an actress.’ Never, ‘I was an actress,” Gilroy adds.
A behind-the-scenes featurette from the set of Forest Hills contains Duvall’s final interview.
