ShGun Season 2 Gets Biggest Update Yet From FX After Emmy Success

As a devoted follower of historical dramas, particularly ones that capture the essence of a bygone era with such precision as Shogun, I am utterly thrilled by the news of Season 2 and potential Seasons 3 and beyond. The first season’s Emmy-winning success has only fueled my anticipation for more tales woven around Lord Toranaga and his intriguing world.

The production for Season 2 of FX’s Shōgun has officially commenced. The team is currently scouting locations and finalizing scripts. Unlike Season 1, which was filmed on various sets to replicate 17th century Japan, Seasons 2 and 3 might feature the real deal. This year, Season 1 of FX’s popular historical drama shattered records at the Primetime Emmys, winning a total of 18 awards – more than any other single television season. Despite being a complete adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, the showrunners, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, alongside star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada, aim to expand the story of Lord Toranaga beyond the book in future seasons.

After the Emmys, John Landgraf, chair of FX Content and FX Productions, shared that the pre-production for Season 2 of Shōgun is progressing well. Initially, it was mentioned that neither Season 2 nor 3 were guaranteed, as their production hinged on the performance of the writing rooms. It seems the writing process turned out to be fruitful, as Landgraf stated, “We’re pushing ahead.” He elaborated further on the project’s status.

We’re making progress! Drafts and plans are being submitted, and we’re deciding on the location for filming. It could be the same spot as before, or we might choose to alter things a bit.

The first season of “Shōgun” was widely praised for its commitment to historical accuracy. Details such as costumes, weapons, rituals, and even the Japanese dialect were sourced directly from historical records. However, the shooting location was a potential challenge. For seasons two and three, it has been suggested that production be moved to Japan, an idea which Landgraf is both enthusiastic about and slightly apprehensive regarding the logistics of production. He expressed this sentiment:

For years, I’ve dreamed about filming in Japan. However, it’s proved challenging to arrange the logistics for our series. The issue lies in the size of our stage setup and the slightly different production scale in Japan. Regrettably, authentic medieval Japanese castles no longer exist, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be available for filming.

Seasons 2 & 3 of Shōgun Will Be Shot Separately

Fans were taken aback when they learned that FX had commissioned a second season for the series “Shōgun,” given it was initially marketed as a limited one. What followed was even greater astonishment upon hearing about FX ordering two more seasons. Several speculations circulated, with Marks and Kondo possibly filming Seasons 2 and 3 consecutively to reduce the time between each season’s release. However, Landgraf clarified that each season is a separate undertaking, and as of now, the fate of Season 3 remains unclear. He stated:

Indeed, these stories are distinct yet interconnected. They share recurring characters, but each has its own individual plotline. As for how many seasons we might see, it’s uncertain at this point, but considering the scope and depth of the narrative, we believe that three seasons could provide a fitting conclusion.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the epic series “Shōgun” features acting greats like Hiroyuki Sanada alongside other talented artists such as Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Yûki Kedôin, Takehiro Hira, and Moeka Hoshi. Unfortunately, there’s no definite timeline for Season 2 yet, but you can catch up with the first season right now by streaming it!
