The realm of professional wrestling has consistently sought to meld fiction with reality, and last night’s grand premiere event for “Queen of the Ring” maintained this pattern as star Toni Storm engaged in a passionate disagreement with Mariah May. For those unaware, yes, this was a wrestling storyline, but it underscored the fact that the sport thrives on entertainment. Storm plays Clara Mortensen in the upcoming biopic, helmed by director Ash Avildsen, which delves into the life of Mildred Burke, who made history as the first million-dollar female athlete in wrestling.
The uproar took place during a Queen of the Ring competition where all the celebrities were present for a walk on the red carpet, being photographed by media personnel. As Storm was striking poses for the cameras, May unexpectedly appeared and dealt a crushing blow that knocked Storm down (captured in the video below). “You mean nothing without me!” May shouted as she was restrained by security. “I made you famous!” The current AEW Women’s World Champion, Storm, will square off against May this coming Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California for the Revolution event. This confrontation is a replay of their previous battle from Grand Slam Australia last month, where Storm emerged victorious to reclaim her title.
Apart from Storm: Queen of the Ring, this production also boasts Emily Bett Rickards from Arrow playing Burke, alongside Walter Goggins, Deborah Ann Woll, Francesca Eastwood, Tyler Posey, and Martin Kove. The movie showcases a variety of skilled wrestlers as well, including Trinity Fatu, Kamille, Britt Baker, and James Cornette. Notably, the director of this film is John G. Avildsen Jr., son of the legendary John G. Avildsen, who directed iconic films like Rocky and the initial Karate Kid series.
Ash Avildsen Says ‘Queen of the Ring’ Could Be a Series
According to Jeff Leen’s 2010 book “The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend,” Avildsen’s latest work offers a comprehensive exploration of how women’s wrestling has transformed over time, largely due to pioneers like Burke. By shattering barriers, individuals such as Burke made it possible for others to step into the ring. MovieWeb reported last year that the director even suggested that this extensive narrative could potentially be developed into its own television series.
Whenever I discuss a film based on a book, I always encourage others to read the original novel. The movie only scratches the surface of the story; it’s like a tiny drop compared to the vast ocean that is the book. Ideally, it would have been a miniseries, and if the movie performs well, perhaps it could be adapted into one in the future. Trust me, there’s so much depth and richness in the book that it deserves at least eight hours of screen time, if not more.
Despite some missing elements from Leen’s book, “Queen of the Ring” remains an engaging film that could be considered the top wrestling movie since Mickey Rourke’s 2008 film “The Wrestler.” Although it has its imperfections, both wrestling enthusiasts and casual cinema-goers might find it worth their time for approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes this weekend. Verify if it’s screening at a theater near you by checking the listings.
