Caution: This article discloses plot points for The Eternaut. If you haven’t watched the Netflix series yet and don’t want any spoilers, it’s best to skip this piece. The story of The Eternaut unfolds as a mysterious apocalypse, leaving viewers intrigued about the near-extinction event depicted in the show. The graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López serves as its basis, and the series commences with lethal snowflakes raining down from the sky. Unfortunately, many characters meet their demise in the initial scenes due to the hazardous nature of the snow touching their skin.
In time, people realize that the unusual weather pattern is more complex than it appears and take precautions such as staying inside or dressing thoroughly to avoid it. Despite the cessation of snowfall in the Netflix post-apocalyptic series, it plays a crucial role in setting the initial plot points. However, the Netflix sci-fi TV show does not provide a clear explanation for the toxic snowfall. Yet, one of the central characters in The Eternaut offers a plausible theory to account for this occurrence.
The Eternaut’s Toxic Snowfall Explained
The Snowfall Was Caused By A Shift In The Earth’s Magnetic Field
Initially, the remaining humans find it tough to grasp the circumstances around them, however, they eventually figure out that the catastrophe seems to be linked with the snowfall. Later on, an electrical engineer named Favalli postulates that the harmful snow could possibly stem from a significant change in the Earth’s magnetic field. He connects this incident to the Van Allen belts, regions where particles charged by electricity are trapped within the Earth’s magnetic field. Since these belts are positioned 1,000 to 60,000 kilometers above the planet’s surface, they don’t have a direct impact on life down here.
As per Favalli’s theory, the Earth undergoes a significant transformation in its magnetic fields when its poles flip due to an unidentified force. This flip causes a temporary decrease in the planet’s magnetic defense, making it possible for cosmic radiation from the Van Allen belts to combine with snow and descend towards the ground. As the radiation approaches the surface, it gradually loses its potency. Nevertheless, the radiation remains potent enough to be lethal if one encounters the falling snow.
The concept put forth by Favalli becomes much clearer when, following the cessation of snowfall, compasses reveal that the poles have switched places. It should be mentioned that while the series does present some scientific reasoning regarding shifting poles and radiation from the Van Allen belt, a large part of its ideas are based on pseudoscience. Although it is possible for poles to shift, radiation from the Van Allen belts cannot reach the surface. However, considering how The Eternaut eventually suggests alien intervention, this additional layer to Favalli’s theory could make it more feasible.
The Deadly Snowfall Was Caused By Aliens In The Eternaut
It Was The First Stage Of The Alien Attack
In “The Eternaut,” the central alien species’ grand strategy and reasons remain largely undisclosed. Yet, it appears clear that their intended assault on humanity unfolds in various steps. The snowfall could be the initial stage of the invasion, where these aliens manipulate conditions to cause a polar shift, thereby disrupting most human transport and communication systems. After this disruption, they deploy colossal insect-like creatures to further undermine human defenses.
In the concluding chapters of “The Eternaut,” it’s clear that the extraterrestrials have the power to control human minds, making some individuals obey their commands. It’s uncertain what their ultimate goals with humans are, but it appears they may be attempting to transform survivors into soldiers to fight a more formidable enemy through manipulation and mind control. Here’s hoping that “The Eternaut” season 2 will shed more light on these concepts and offer some clarity.
