Shocking Twists and Heartbreak: ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Finale Will Leave You Speechless!

Beware: Here comes some information about the Season 2 ending of The Last of Us. After eagerly anticipating its comeback for what seemed like forever, it’s back to waiting again, as the season finale aired only two months after the show returned. And let me tell you, it ended with quite a dramatic flair, tying up some loose ends that directly align with the midpoint of video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II.

Craig Mazin, the showrunner, has subtly suggested that a fourth season might be necessary for a complete adaptation of the storyline. Although we’re uncertain about this idea, it’s undeniable that the third season is set to deviate from its predecessors, taking a significant structural risk that could divide fans (especially following the shocking death of Joel). However, whether this gamble succeeds or not, the season finale successfully concluded this year’s storyline and has left us anxiously waiting for what’s to come in the next installment.

Ellie’s Revenge Quest Ends With a Bang

During Ellie’s third day in Seattle, internal conflicts within her team escalate significantly. While Dina recovers from her injuries, Ellie discovers that Abby has sought refuge at a nearby aquarium. Instead of letting this opportunity pass, she decides to track down and eliminate Abby, even after learning that Tommy requires assistance against the WLF. This decision ultimately leads Jesse to distance herself from Ellie.

As a film enthusiast, I found myself ensnared by the Seraphites in an episode that, truth be told, seemed more like excess than integral plot development. However, I managed to break free and made my way to the aquarium. Upon arrival, I ran into Owen and Mel. They held the key to Abby’s whereabouts, but instead of leading me, Owen drew a gun, forcing me into a deadly confrontation. In the heat of the moment, I was compelled to defend myself, resulting in Owen’s untimely demise. Mel, on the other hand, took a stray bullet that grazed her neck, leaving her gravely wounded.

This incident could be one of the saddest scenes in the series so far, as Ellie discovers that Mel is expecting a child. As Mel nears death, she pleads with Ellie to save her unborn baby, but Ellie lacks the necessary medical knowledge and tragically, both mother and child perish. This heart-wrenching event appears to snap Ellie out of her violent obsession, as when Tommy arrives shortly thereafter, she’s much more receptive to his idea of returning to Jackson. She recognizes that her pursuit of vengeance has only brought her more suffering.

However, upon returning to the theater and reconciling with Jesse, Abby suddenly appears and seizes Tommy, suspecting he had killed her friends. In a startling turn of events, she slays Jesse, causing Ellie to plead for Tommy’s life, confessing her own guilt. Recognizing Ellie from three months prior, an enraged Abby growls, “I gave you a chance to live,” before firing the gun as the scene fades to darkness.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Will Heavily Feature Abby

Not only does the final scene unfold more revelations, it rewinds to the very first day in Seattle, where we find Abby conscious again in the WLF’s secret lair. This instantaneously clarifies the trajectory for season three, as the series plans a narrative trick similar to “Rashomon,” recounting the recent events in Seattle from the WLF’s viewpoint, and most notably, Abby’s perspective.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for the profound impact of “The Last of Us Part II.” The strategic decision to portray Joel’s death so early in the game was instrumental in evoking a desire for vengeance within me, the player. However, as the narrative unfolded, Neil Druckmann skillfully shifted my perspective from Ellie’s revenge-driven mindset to a more objective view of the repercussions of her thirst for blood.

Recently, some fellow fans have argued that this season’s vengeance plot has leaned too heavily on one side, and that both the WLF and the Seraphites have been somewhat underdeveloped. Yet, I believe this might just be part of the masterful design: Season 3 promises to delve deeply into their perspectives, offering us a comprehensive understanding of their motivations and actions.

It’s not by chance that Abby becomes more relatable as the game progresses, as we observe her gradually challenge the WLF’s war against the Seraphites. This happens before she tragically witnesses one by one, the deaths of her closest allies. So far, the series hasn’t hesitated to depict Ellie’s vengeful journey nearing a dangerous edge, but delving into Abby’s half of the narrative makes us ponder who the true antagonist is or if there even is one. In a striking turn of events, although she doesn’t comprehend what pushed Joel to such extreme lengths that he became the villain in another’s tale, now she experiences the same journey herself.

As a die-hard fan of The Last of Us, I must confess that the abrupt ending left me yearning for resolution – it wasn’t quite as fulfilling as the first season finale. However, there was an odd sense of purpose to its abruptness, hinting at an exhilarating (and perhaps contentious) direction for the series that promises a departure from anything we’ve witnessed before in The Last of Us. With bated breath, I await the next chapter, even if it means another long wait. The Last of Us is currently streaming on Max – can’t wait to see where this journey takes us!
