Shogun took home the Golden Globe trophy for best TV drama series Sunday.
Justin Marks, the brain behind the historical FX samurai series, reminisced about an unusual incident during his acceptance speech after winning an earlier Emmy award. Earlier that day, he and his wife, co-creator Rachel Kondo, were searching their garden at home for a 50-pound tortoise that had gone missing.
In this version, I’ve tried to maintain the original context while making it more readable and natural for a wider audience.
Mark expressed his surprise during the Golden Globes ceremony, stating that no aspect of this show was ever anticipated. He credited the endless ‘yes’ responses from our diverse East-West cast and crew over the years for making it possible. With gratitude to our writer, directors, partners at Disney Television, FX, and Hulu, he acknowledged their repeated affirmations to a project that, on paper, they should not have agreed to. It’s remarkable that everyone is still employed, he added.
It’s amazing that our marriage has managed to endure, and it would be nothing short of miraculous if we were to locate our lost tortoise again. That’s why I intend to get a GPS tracker for it as soon as possible, girls. I promise you on this. And I truly appreciate your efforts,” Mark emphasized.
After winning a Golden Globe, the acclaimed non-English language drama “Shogun” went on to break records by claiming an unprecedented 18 awards at the 2024 Emmys. Remarkably, this was not the first time such a feat occurred as series lead Hiroyuki Sanada and co-star Anna Sawai had previously won Golden Globes for their exceptional performances in the drama. During the same awards ceremony, Sanada took home the Golden Globe for best TV drama actor, while Sawai was honored with the Golden Globe for best TV drama actress.
2025’s Golden Globes saw the arrival of a formidable contender, “Shogun,” who had amassed four nominations. Despite tough competition from shows like Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal,” Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs Smith,” Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” and Netflix’s “Squid Game,” it emerged victorious in the best TV drama category.
The groundbreaking FX samurai series, titled “Shogun,” made history by becoming the first non-English show to win the Best Drama award at the 2024 Emmys earlier this year. This significant victory is a monumental step forward for Asian representation on global television, as it continues to triumph during the awards season based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name.
The 2025 Golden Globes took place on Jan. 5 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
The Golden Globe Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is co-owned by Penske Media Eldridge – a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, who also own The Hollywood Reporter.
