In the game “Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon,” there’s a side mission titled “Dead as Dreams.” In this mission, players are assigned by Fearghas, the quartermaster from the Horns of the South, to delve into the rumors about the appearance of undead creatures in the neighboring Forgotten Cemetery.
As players delve deeper into this area, they’ll eventually run into the enigmatic figure of Yorath, who has been animating the deceased to better understand the bond between life and death. There are various paths you can take in dealing with him: kill, spare, or persuade him to abandon his endeavors. The ways, consequences, and rewards for each choice are outlined below.
In this version, I’ve aimed to make the text more conversational and easier to understand while still maintaining the original meaning.
Should You Kill Yorath or Let Him Go in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon
There are three possible ways to resolve the Dead as Dreams quest and the fate of Yorath. They are:
- Attack and kill Yorath.
- Convince Yorath to turn himself into an undead.
- Convince Yorath to give up Necromancy.
Option #1: Attack and kill Yorath
Should you decide to eliminate Yorath immediately upon encountering him, here’s what you can expect to find on his person as loot.
- Yorath’s Journal
- A Solution for Disobedience? Revenant Armor! (Recipe Book for a powerful mage armor set)
- Skull Staff (Increases Mana Shield by 10%. On hit, restores 10% of damage dealt as mana)
- Burning Ember (Spell)
- Skeleton Army (Spell)
- Soul Salvage (Spell)
- Necromancer’s Mask
- Necromancer’s Robe
After killing Yorath, talk to Huardoc, and he will give you an additional reward:
- Abhartach’s Calling (Spell)
In addition, Huardoc will instruct you to deposit Yorath’s mortal remains within the Inner Crypt, thereby starting the quest titled “Non Omnis Moriar”. This action will also grant you the Inner Crypt Key. To gather Yorath’s memento, proceed to the location of his deceased body. Upon finding it, take the remembrance and journey to the Inner Crypt. Once there, turn to your right and locate a room containing an empty stele and an urn for ashes. Deposit Yorath’s remains inside this urn, then select an inscription to commemorate him.
Inside the Inner Crypt, there’s a second edition of Abhartach’s Calling, The Waning Ward (which is also known as The Shield), and an additional cookbook waiting for you.
The Inner Crypt houses yet another version of Abhartach’s Calling, along with The Waning Ward (or The Shield) and a new recipe book.
When you return to Huardoc, you’ll find that he is dead.
The book next to Huardoc is a recipe book on how to craft the Knight armor set.
Option #2: Convince Yorath to Turn into an Undead
Speak with Yorath and opt for the friendly conversation. Once you’ve gone through all his dialogues, you will encounter two choices that depend on your stats:
- That’s because you may know the process, but don’t understand its nature. (Spirituality)
- What you’re missing might just be practical experience. (Practicality)
As a fan eager for guidance, I’ll first engage Huardah, the loquacious spirit nearby, to reassure Yorath that his wisdom is required. After our conversation, head back to Yorath, choosing regular dialogue options. His transformation into an undead being will follow. Upon my return to Huordah, he’ll reward me with the enchanting spell known as Abhartach’s Calling and promise to assist Yorath in his present state.
Once Yorath transforms into an undead creature, you can immediately eliminate him to collect all the items he carries, equivalent to Option #1. However, in this case, you’ll also receive Monster Blood and Rotten Meat as extra loot.
With this approach, Huardoc won’t hand over the Key to the Inner Crypt because he has no intention of burying Yorath’s remains. However, the only way to acquire the Inner Crypt Key using this method is by taking Huardoc’s life and searching his body for the key.
Option #3: Convince Yorath to give up Necromancy
To persuade Yorath to willingly abandon his pursuits, follow the steps outlined in Option #2 and make him understand that he should initially listen to Huardoc. Once you’ve had a conversation with Huardoc, you’ll then need to achieve success in the subsequent dialogue where you present this information to Yorath.
- No, I’m trying to make you realize that your pursuit is hopeless. (Perception)
Once Yorath decides to abandon Necromancy and embark on a fresh path in life, he will depart from the Cemetery right away, offering you these subsequent benefits:
- Skeleton Army (Spell)
- Soul Salvage (Spell)
- Hexbounce Wand (Blocking deflects incoming projectiles at the cost of 10 mana. Parrying deflects and duplicates projectiles for free.)
Speak with Huardoc, and you’ll discover his delight upon realizing that Yorath is absent. In return for your service, he’ll hand over the Inner Crypt Key to you. Feel free to take whatever you find within, as outlined in Option #1.
You can also get the Hexbounce Wand from the Blood Cave during the quest, Blood Stains the Circle.
What Should You Do With Yorath in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Directly eliminating Yorath grants the most significant rewards, and there’s no particular player stat needed for this action. The only instance where you might not opt for this is if you aim for a ‘good’ ending, which occurs when you persuade Yorath that his mission will fail. However, to succeed in this path, you must have developed either Spirituality and Perception, or Practicality and Perception. Otherwise, your dialogue choices may fall short.
Given the significant role that initial stats play in the game Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, and since players usually encounter this quest early on, doing so might prove challenging. Essentially, persuading Yorath to transform into an undead is equivalent to option one, but instead of receiving the Key to the Inner Crypt for nothing, you’ll have to defeat Huardoc to acquire it.
