During her hosting of the Golden Globes in January, Nikki Glaser generally kept things polite, but she couldn’t help taking a jab at one of Hollywood’s most well-known facts. In her opening speech, she humorously commented, “I find it amazing how meditating takes away your eyelids.” This was a reference to the increasingly common eyelid lift surgery. “So handy,” she added. It’s likely that Glaser intended this joke to be well-received by the celebrities present, many of whom might have had blepharoplasty, the official name for the popular cosmetic procedure among the Hollywood elite.
As a gamer who’s always up for sharing experiences, I can tell you that some popular figures like Ali Wentworth and Catt Sadler have been vocal about undergoing a certain procedure. Catt, whose transformation (which included a facelift) was handled by plastic surgeon Steve Kim, has been quite open about her journey. “I’m overjoyed with the results, it was a breeze, and I wholeheartedly recommend it,” she says, the TV personality and podcast host of Catt Sadler Now. “Now, my eyes are wide awake, youthful, and filled with a doe-like charm. It wasn’t an uncomfortable experience, and it healed swiftly. After the surgery, I found myself thinking, ‘I wish I had done this years ago.’
It’s possible that you may have observed a highly-paid supermodel appearing remarkably refreshed, an unexpectedly vigilant actor who has won an Oscar in the action category, or a TV personality with a noticeable lack of tiredness around their eyes.
According to oculoplastic surgeon Guy Massry, one noticeable sign of appearing older than your actual age is sagging eyelids, often referred to as ‘hooded eyes.’ A procedure called blepharoplasty can effectively enhance both the upper and lower eye regions in just under two hours. This quick treatment offers a substantial improvement towards a more youthful appearance. As Massry points out, when performed by a skilled surgeon, patients typically experience excellent results.
Michael Groth, an ophthalmic plastic surgeon, remarks that this specific surgery is quite prevalent among celebrities and news broadcasters. He explains, ‘If your profession revolves around being in front of the camera, it’s not just about personal appearance – it’s also a strategic move for your career.’ Similarly, Ben Talei, another plastic surgeon, shares that this operation is frequently performed at his clinic. He says, ‘I perform many blepharoplasty procedures on a wide range of individuals, from actors and comedians to athletes and fashion designers.’
Historically, the majority of blepharoplasty (eye surgery) patients have been women, however, an increasing number of men are choosing to undergo this procedure. According to oculoplastic surgeon Robert Schwarcz, “the male population is experiencing a surge in eye surgery.” This trend is also observed among younger individuals, as noted by Massry: “Whereas it was primarily patients in their 40s and 50s who sought consultations, I’m now seeing more patients in their 30s.
Two main types of eyelid surgeries exist: one for the upper eyelid, primarily used to address droopy lids by removing excess skin; and another for the lower eyelid, aimed at reducing under-eye puffiness and bags, often achieved through fat pad removal or rearrangement. Both upper and lower eyelid surgeries last between 30 and 45 minutes, usually performed with local anesthesia. Many patients opt for both procedures simultaneously. As Massry explains, “An upper eyelid surgery is generally straightforward with minimal complications. On the other hand, a lower eyelid surgery… can be more complex, may lead to greater swelling, and may require a longer recovery period.
A prudent surgeon would advise patients to dissolve under-eye fillers with a special solution about two weeks before a lower eyelid lift (lower bleph). “Fillers and surgery can clash,” Massry notes. “They may cause complications, make recovery difficult, and potentially alter the intended outcome, so it’s best to get rid of them ahead of time.” When planning upper eyelid surgery, it is crucial to evaluate the positioning of the eyebrows as well. “One common mistake surgeons make is focusing on the upper eyelid when in reality, the eyebrows are the ones that require adjustment,” he explains. For some patients, addressing not only the skin on the eyelid but also the positioning of the eyebrows becomes necessary due to changes in brow positioning as we age. “In my practice, about 90% of the patients who ask for an upper eyelid lift (upper bleph) actually need a eyebrow reshaping along with it.
As a gamer, when it comes to choosing the right surgeon for an eyelid surgery, it’s crucial to opt for a highly skilled, board-certified professional who specializes in this particular procedure. Don’t forget to scrutinize before and after photos, just like I would inspect the stats of my potential gaming allies. Among the surgeons recommended, Kami Parsa, John Holds, and Christopher Zoumalan are often top picks for blepharoplasty, similar to how certain characters excel in specific game roles.
The cost for blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) can vary between $5,000 to $14,000 per eye area (upper and lower), while a brow recontouring procedure starts at $5,000. Additional costs may apply for the surgical facility and anesthesia. Usually, insurance does not cover these cosmetic procedures. However, if your vision is significantly affected by drooping eyelids, certain insurers might cover upper blepharoplasty; a comprehensive vision test will be necessary to prove impairment.
After surgery, recovery is relatively simple, and patients can go home bandage-free. However, there might be some discomfort and the eyelids may feel heavy,” notes Schwarcz. He further suggests that those who are sensitive to pain might need acetaminophen or a stronger medication. Additionally, icing the eyelids every hour for three days, applying antibiotic ointment, using extra pillows, and sleeping in an upright position are recommended for quicker healing, asserts Massry.
Even though eyelid surgeries are typically deemed safe and straightforward, they may still carry potential risks such as dryness of the eyes or vision becoming unclear, which usually resolve on their own. Additionally, some surgeons might unintentionally overdo it by removing excess skin, potentially causing incomplete eye closure afterwards, as highlighted by Massry.
A week following surgery, stitches are taken out, and it’s recommended to avoid exercising at the gym for at least two weeks. You may experience some bruising and swelling which should fade within two weeks to a month. According to Schwarcz, the extent of healing can vary between patients, but many find themselves comfortable enough to go out in public without sunglasses just a week afterward.
Although surgery might offer more permanent changes, there are non-surgical options available that can provide a rejuvenated, wide-awake appearance. Dr. Sonia Batra, a dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, advocates for Daxxify, a type of injectable neurotoxin. “By weakening the muscle responsible for pulling down the brow, it can offer a 1 to 2 millimeter brow lift that usually persists for four to six months.
As Glaser put it, really convenient.
