Enthusiasts erupted in joy upon hearing news of another installment, but after catching a sneak peek at the upcoming movie, they’ve found one aspect that has sparked criticism. As Dreamworks unveiled the first look at the new film through an official casting video announcement, there seems to be a slight alteration in everyone’s beloved ogre character that has stirred up quite a reaction, with some fans even advocating for the project to be scrapped altogether.
Although it might seem excessive for a minor alteration in animation style within a short clip to spark such intense criticism, even small deviations from a proven formula can ignite passionate reactions among fans. In this scenario, the change that’s causing upset is the shift in animation style, which some viewers are strongly against. Some have gone as far as proposing a petition akin to those launched against the “Ugly Sonic” design, aiming to persuade Dreamworks to revert back to the original animation style of the first four movies before the release of Shrek 5, which is set for cinemas next Christmas.
The video revealed an unanticipated addition to the cast for the upcoming Shrek film: Zendaya will play Shrek’s daughter alongside franchise veterans Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. Despite this exciting news, the video has sparked a wave of skepticism on social media, rapidly escalating into widespread criticism in no time. Although there are no specific plot details or additional cast members announced yet, fans were hoping for more of the franchise’s familiar humor to shine through in the new movie. However, the announcement of Zendaya as Shrek’s daughter has left some fans feeling disappointed, even though the actual film is still shrouded in mystery.
@SammyFabelmen took the frontline with a post on X: “I’ve just seen the new animation for Shrek 5, I think they should scrap the whole project right now.” @Doofinc_ concurred, commenting that “the animation appears quite odd.” On the other hand, @thehorrorgoth proposed some proactive measures to grab Dreamworks’ attention.
Is it feasible for us to persuade DreamWorks Animation to alter the style of Shrek 5’s animation, similar to how we managed to convince Paramount Pictures to modify Sonic’s animation?
‘Shrek 5’ Is Doing the One Thing That Long-Term Fans Hate
The Shrek series stands among the largest and most triumphant animated franchises ever created. Launched by the 2001 movie that cleverly parodied classic fairy tales, it wove an original tale with unexpected twists on familiar characters, eventually earning massive box-office success. Since then, four sequels, a separate Puss in Boots series, and various short films have been produced, leaving the unique visual style of Shrek deeply etched into viewers’ minds.
In the fifteen years since Shrek Forever After was released in 2010, the entertainment industry has undergone significant transformations. The techniques used in animation and the technology available have evolved multiple times over. Striking and vibrant animated productions like Sony’s Spider-Verse films and the diverse styles showcased in anthology series such as Amazon’s Secret Level have been met with tremendous success. Although fans may resist changes to the appearance of a cherished, iconic character, change is inevitable, and at times, we must adapt to these transformations.
It’s important to keep in mind that this trailer for the film is merely a sneak peek, and one that will be released more than two years before it hits theaters in December 2026. As such, there’s a chance that the trailer was hastily put together and may not reflect the final quality of the movie. Alternatively, DreamWorks might use audience feedback to fine-tune the film. Regardless, predicting Shrek 5 as an enormous box office hit next year could be premature.
