‘Shrek 5’ Delayed to 2026

Universal Pictures has adjusted their release plan. Over the weekend, they disclosed that the eagerly awaited DreamWorks Animation movie featuring the beloved green ogre, Shrek 5, will now debut during the holiday season in 2026 instead of its initial July 1, 2026 summer premiere.

Instead of the fifth Shrek movie, the third Minions film from Illumination has been shifted a year earlier from its initial July 1, 2027 release. In its place for June 2027 is another unnamed Illumination project. The previously announced release date for Shrek 5 in December 2026 coincides with the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

In the upcoming “Shrek 5”, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are set to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona respectively. Following her retirement announcement in 2018, Diaz has returned to film acting, most recently starring alongside Jamie Foxx in a Netflix action film. The original “Shrek” movie, which debuted in 2001, was the first to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Over the course of its franchise, the films have amassed a total worldwide gross of over $2.9 billion USD. The series has also been adapted into a Tony-nominated and Drama Desk-nominated Broadway musical, and boasts an immersive attraction at Universal Studios Parks.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that I, along with many others, eagerly anticipate the upcoming fifth sequel! This time around, it will be helmed by none other than Walt Dohrn, who previously contributed his artistic and writing talents to the second and third installments. Furthermore, Gina Shay is set to return as producer, adding even more excitement to this already fantastic news!
