As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of some iconic characters, I am thrilled to share my thoughts on the upcoming Season 2 of Shrinking. Having already been captivated by the unique charm of Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, I was intrigued to learn about his mysterious role in this hit Apple TV+ series.
The eagerly awaited second season of the popular Apple TV+ series, “Shrinking,” has arrived, leaving fans of Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”) curious about his on-screen role. Details regarding Goldstein’s enigmatic recurring character are still under wraps, but Jason Segel (“How I Met Your Mother”), who jointly created the show with Goldstein and Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs,” “Ted Lasso”), recently shared insights in an interview with MovieWeb about why it was significant for him to involve Goldstein on-camera.
Brett could have taken any role in the show, but once the character was created, I just couldn’t picture anyone else playing it,” Segel stated. “I believe Brett is a fantastic actor and an extremely sensitive individual who hasn’t had the chance yet to display the full range of his talents. However, I am confident that he will have countless opportunities to do so in future roles.
In the scenes I have with this character, I aimed for an opponent who seemed equally powerful, and that’s exactly what Brett delivers.
Jason Segel explained that it was crucial for him to handle Goldstein’s inclusion with care, given that fans adore him as the brooding Roy Kent on Ted Lasso. This was significant to Segel because he had experienced a similar situation where people might think, “Yes, but that’s not like Marshall Eriksen from How I Met Your Mother.” So, Segel wanted to address this quickly for Brett Goldstein, to make it easier for him to step into different roles.
Expect Big Changes to Shrinking in Season 2
2023 saw me completely captivated by “Shrinking” as it premiered on Apple TV+. Not only did it secure a swift renewal for another season, but its appeal became irresistible once I learned that Jason Segel was at the helm. Now, let me tell you, Segel’s work on the underappreciated series “Dispatches from Elsewhere” is a must-see, but when you add the fact that he co-created this show with Emmy Award winners Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, well, it just becomes too tempting to resist.
In the second season of Shrinking, the quirky grieving therapist Jimmy (Segel) and other characters venture into uncharted territories, virtually guaranteeing a third season. Although some aspects remain consistent, such as Jimmy’s unorthodox professional approach, there will be substantial changes in almost every character’s personal relationships. You can anticipate these shifts.
Regarding how Segel envisioned the ending of season 2 for viewers, he noted: “I usually don’t dwell too much on people’s reactions and instead focus on genuinely doing what I should between ‘action’ and ‘cut’. I believe that’s what makes art fascinating – it allows people to feel about it as they wish. I’m looking forward to the diverse range of responses this season could inspire.” The first two episodes of Shrinking’s second season will be available on Apple TV+ starting October 16, with a new episode following each week.
