As a longtime fan of both comedy and Harrison Ford, I can confidently say that the canoe scene between Jason Segel and the legendary actor in Shrinking Season 2, Episode 6 was nothing short of pure magic. It’s not every day you find Indiana Jones paddling a canoe with Forrest Mallard (Segel), but this scene had me laughing out loud while also tugging at my heartstrings.
Warning: This discussion contains spoilers for the sixth episode of Season 2 from the show ‘Shrinking’. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can stream the series on Apple TV+, which is available with a subscription. New episodes premiere every Wednesday.
In the heart of season two of “Shrinking,” I’m consistently taken aback by the unexpected tasks given to Harrison Ford. From car singing to unintentionally getting high, the series never fails to surprise. Yet, among all these extraordinary scenes, my favorite thus far is when he found himself in a canoe with Jason Segel during Season 2, Episode 6. Therefore, when I got an opportunity to interrogate the actor portraying Jimmy about his upcoming show on the 2024 TV lineup, I couldn’t help but ask for the backstory behind this riotous moment in the canoe.
During the interviews for Season 2 of “Shrinking,” I seized the opportunity to speak with Jason Segel regarding his amusing canoe sequence alongside Harrison Ford. Interestingly, Segel isn’t merely an actor on this Apple TV+ show; he is also a co-creator, executive producer, and writer. Upon receiving the script for the canoe scene, Segel initially felt uncertain about it:
In simpler terms, we’re talking about a group of people who manage the show’s system of checks and balances. Interestingly enough, I tend to lean towards the view that this group should not be too expansive in its role. I serve as that check and balance within this group. When they suggested, ‘Trust us, but for this task, you’ll be in a canoe,’ my initial reaction was something along the lines of, ‘Oh dear.’ However, upon seeing it and actually doing it, I found it hilarious.
Witnessing Paul vigorously agitate the boat to unnerve Jimmy, Jimmy retaliating with a barrage of fishing trivia to humiliate Paul and the two engaging in constant banter was captivating. Moreover, this scene played a significant role in creating drama as well: the therapists managed to persuade Sean’s father – who they rowed out to join while he was angling – to reconcile with his son.
All in all, this plotline showcased yet again Shrinking’s knack for blending profound messages with humor, making a strong case for why Harrison Ford might excel in more comedic roles.
Without a doubt, that scene was a hilarious gem, and it’s likely to be remembered as one of the funniest from this season. What made it even more enjoyable was that it was a standout moment for Jason Segel as well. Continuing our conversation, the star of The Muppets shared his thoughts while filming the amusing scene with the Star Wars actor:
“Spending the day in a canoe with Harrison Ford was one of the best experiences of my life. Honestly, I feel incredibly fortunate. Of course, there are other things to discuss about the show, such as its humor. But what stands out to me the most is the fact that I’m paddling alongside Harrison Ford, creating comedy together. Incredible, isn’t it?
To me, it appeared that Segel was clearly amazed that this scene was captured on film, and I completely understand why. Frankly, I too was taken aback to find Jimmy and Paul canoeing during this season. Yet, these humorous moments are precisely what make Shrinking one of Apple TV+’s outstanding series.
To revisit the side-splitting canoe scene featuring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, you could stream the show “Shrinking” on Apple TV+. Don’t forget to join us every Wednesday to catch more of their unexpected adventures as Season 2 unfolds.
